Composed over the warm spring and summer of 1791, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart weaves a comedic fairy tale of forbidden love and the search for wisdom and virtue in Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute).
Originally written for and premiered at a suburban theatre in Vienna, the Theater auf der Wieden, the stage spectacle gripped audiences, quickly becoming a crowd favourite of the time with admiring composers creating their own arrangements.
One such arrangement written by Mozart’s former student and composer Carl Andreas Göepfert was lost to the world not long after it's creation – tucked into a vault only to be found over 200 years later by a musicologist colleague of Johannes Fritzsch. Conductor, and long time friend to the TSO.
In a gesture of profound kindness, Johannes brought the lost arrangement to the TSO and gifted Tasmania the first public performance in 2018 for what was most likely over 200 years.
Now, just as the dust has begun to settle, we reopen the vault for a special performance of this enchanting arrangement for wind instruments in Franklin's century-old Palais Theatre and Triabunna's Spring Bay Mill.
Conducted by TSO Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Eivind Aadland, the TSO will bring the allure of The Magic Flute and the lost arrangement to life on stage.
Featuring one flute, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns and a double bass.
