Symphony Notes for March 2, 2016

Variations for Spring

"Variations for Spring"

April 2 and 3

Say goodbye to winter with one of the best-known pieces of American classical music, Aaron Copland's Suite from Appalachian Spring (featuring the Shaker song "Simple Gifts").

Folk songs form the basis of two more works on this picturesque program, both by British composers: George Butterworth's The Banks of Green Willow and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Five Variants of 'Dives and Lazarus.' The orchestra will also perform a newly commissioned piece by noted composer and Yale faculty member Christopher Theofanidis.
