Spotlighted Project: Restoring Minnesota Ojibwe Language Resources: The Phonetic Texts of William Jones and J. P. B. de Josselin de Jong
Book covers of Ojibwa Texts and Original Odžibwe TextsThe books, Ojibwa Texts by William Jones and Original Odžibwe Texts by J.P.B. de Josselin de Jong, contain phonetically recorded narratives documenting the Ojibwe language, Anishinaabemowin. The language was spoken in Northern Minnesota and the Border Lakes region of Minnesota and Ontario in the early 20th century. It was time to apply what has been learned about the Ojibwe language in the last 100 years to fully repatriate the texts of this library of Ojibwe traditions, restoring them for future generations, in cooperation with the language experts, descendants of the tradition bearers. They, as children, heard these kinds of stories and rich language from their grandparents and great-grandparents.

Working with Ojibwe Elders and linguistic documents, the Ojibwe texts of the Jones and Josselin de Jong have been restored. Several versions of each text were prepared, including a plain Ojibwe reading text, a simple glossed interlinear text, and an analytical interlinear text keyed to a lexicon. Each text has a glossary and the original English translations retyped to match the reading texts. The book will provide access to the texts for readers of Ojibwe and languages because of the use of a standard writing system and the correction of thousands of errors of transcription, word division, and typesetting. It will be published by the Linguistics Department of the University of Manitoba, which has funds available for the publication in its Algonquian linguistic series.
Recipient: Regents of the University of Minnesota (American Indian Studies)
Amount awarded: $48,675

Minneculture In-Depth: ‘A Brief History of Women in Bars: A Minnesota Story in Three Rounds’
One hundred years ago, two major constitutional amendments went into effect. The 18th marked the start of Prohibition and the 19th granted many women the right to vote. It wasn’t a coincidence that these laws went into effect adjacent to one another. The movements were linked in some surprising ways.

In this new documentary, “A Brief History of Women in Bars: A Minnesota Story in Three Rounds,” Fulbright Fellow, historian, and podcaster Katie Thornton looks at how the state’s temperance movement set the stage for its women’s suffrage movement. But she also looks at how temperance leaders—and, by proxy, many early suffragists—failed to engage many women who weren’t wealthy, White, Anglo-Saxon Protestants. And the Minnesota women who didn’t fit that bill empowered themselves in other ways—sometimes through the economic and social opportunities presented by the alcohol industry.

Tip Jar

July is a Good Time to Start Planning for Winter Roof Woes
Will the roof at your historic building survive another Minnesota winter? A sealed building envelope, especially at the roof, is key to historic building preservation and now is a good time to check out its condition. Look for missing shingles, torn membranes, deteriorated flashings and signs that roof drains and gutters are not functioning properly. At the interior, be sure to investigate any evidence of moisture intrusion to avoid bigger challenges that could occur after the cold weather arrives. And please use caution with ladders and roof riggings!
