LOOKING UP

Scott Whitehair and Tales of the Night Chicago Burned.

NARRATING THE GREAT CHICAGO FIRE

From CAC Docent Ellen Shubart

Over the past few months, the CAC has marked the 150th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire with numerous programs and tours exploring the infamous blaze’s history. On November 3, professional storyteller Scott Whitehair uses personal narrative to help us understand the past with the enthralling program Tales of the Night Chicago Burned.

Whitehair has been undertaking research at the Chicago History Museum, going through “three big boxes” of Chicagoans’ narratives – told in letters, diaries and newspaper accounts. The CAC performance will honor the memories of families who had to carry their remaining belongings through the city streets or watch their business become a pile of ashes during the Great Chicago Fire. The performance is not a historic fact sheet, but rather many real stories woven into one compelling chronicle.

Whitehair tells the story of the human experience through personal accounts. Unlike a tour docent, who shares the scenes and sites of a historic event, a storyteller is more involved in the experiences of people during that time. While Whitehair has a background in improvisation, he chooses to tell stories in his own voice, rather than act them out in character. He loves reminding people that we are all storytellers. As he says: “we bring more humanity into the telling.”

REFLECTING ON HISPANIC/LATINX HERITAGE MONTH

As we reflect on the conclusion of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), we would like to spotlight two architects doing incredible work in the Chicagoland area and their experiences around identity in the architecture field. Even though Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month has come to a close, we strive to recognize the accomplishments of Latinx architects every day.

Read on to hear from Dori del Río, born and raised in Puerto Rico and currently working at CannonDesign, and Linda Chavez, born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico and currently working at JGMA.
