The popular podcast Museum Confidential takes the stage at Doris Duke Theatre May 19 for a special live recording. Joining host and podcast founder Jeff Martin are renowned architect and entrepreneur Ma Ry Kim and neurologist Dr. Kazuma Nakagawa, the co-founders of the Brain Health Applied Research Institute (B+HARI).

Inspired by HoMA’s immersive botanical installation Rebecca Louise Law: Awakening, Martin will lead a lively conversation on new research that connects art, nature and brain health.

In 2021, aware of how the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated every aspect of brain disease, from mental health to strokes, Kim and Nakagawa co-founded B+HARI. They also saw how after being diagnosed with brain trauma, most people receive limited ongoing treatment to help restore lost brain function, mental health, sleep quality and overall brain health. The mission of B+HARI is to craft actionable, sustainable experiences to help restore brain health by incorporating a scalable program based on real-world application of the latest research findings from neuroscience, aging and longevity, indigenous cultural practice, high-tech innovations in virtual reality, microbiome and gut health, and microalgae oceanography.

Blending scientific, cultural and environmental experiences—with an emphasis on “living aloha”—B+HARI connects with a wide range of industries, including museums, professional sports and traditional healthcare to craft therapies that help restore brain functioning lost to traumatic injury and disease. About the connection between brain health and creativity, Kim states: “It goes without saying that creativity is a critical part to thriving as a whole human being as it positively impacts both our minds and bodies. An important part of our research is to understand the scientific data behind the crossroads of arts and neuroscience so that we can create structures around lifestyle changes that are accessible and simple. We want to empower people to take a tangible self-care approach to their own brain health and essentially bridge the gap between the neuroscience and the person.”

Museum Confidential, carried on NPR and Spotify, takes listeners behind the scenes of museums, tackling an eclectic and entertaining range of museum-related subjects, from the recent exhibition Van Gogh in America to the hidden history of black cinema.

About Museum Confidential
Host and founder Jeff Martin is the assistant director of communications at the Philbrook Museum of Art. In 2017, the museum organized an exhibition called Museum Confidential, which aimed to reveal the inner workings of museums. Martin created the podcast to accompany the exhibition and it was such a hit that it continued after the show closed. To ensure the podcast was done right, Martin reached out to Scott Gregory, producer at Public Radio Tulsa, who became co-creator. The podcast is now available on NPR.org, iTunes and Spotify.
