Villela blends the ever-present samba of her native Brazil with jazz, blues, and songs from around the globe. Iconic San Francisco Chronicle critic Phil Elwood enthused, “Villela doesn't just sing – she actually dances with her voice on top of Brazilian beats.” She performs the music of pioneering Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina and iconic Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, as well as classics from Antônio Carlos Jobim,
Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil and more.
This week celebrates the music of John Luther Adams, described by The New Yorker as "one of the most original musical thinkers of the new century." The week's first two concerts, including June 28th's world premiere of Everything That Rises, are performed by the JACK Quartet, one of the world’s premier chamber groups, while Doug Perkins leads a number of percussion works including the free 80-minute outdoor piece Inuksuit at Sutro Baths, Lands End. This week also includes the six-hour sound installation work Veils And Vesper at Grace Cathedral. RadioLab podcast praises Adams' music as "immersive listening experiences that fully take you in ... massive swells of sound". In an interview Adams' did this week for SF Classical Voice, he declared "I’m convinced that this is the biggest such series of events devoted exclusively to my music that’s ever happened."
The enduring legacy of jazz visionary and legendary eccentric Sun Ra is celebrated by
this ensemble made up of Arkestra veterans and a younger generation of musicians led by saxophonist Marshall Allen – a fixture of Sun Ra’s bands since 1958.
The group integrates Ellington-influenced big band swing with free jazz, the blues, electronics, and African musical traditions while establishing a singular visual style that combined futuristic concepts with ancient Egyptian iconography.
World renowned Montreal-based DJ presents his revolutionary show featuring projected puppeteers, string ensemble, and live DJ mixing in an enchanting adaptation of his futuristic graphic novel about a music-loving robot falling in love. The Guardian calls the performance “emotionally stirring, then lighthearted and humorous, pulling together musical references as varied as the Psycho soundtrack and Duke Ellington.”
