A note from Maria Angelica Cuellar, Latino Alliance Advisory Board member, on last month’s joint CSO African American Network and Latino Alliance event

Noche de jazz on April 25 marked a captivating fusion of classical and jazz, orchestrated by the CSO and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, helmed by Giancarlo Guerrero and Wynton Marsalis. The synergy between classical finesse and jazz rhythms enchanted the audience, uniting disparate styles in a harmonious dance. As notes reverberated, attendees embarked on a mesmerizing journey, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts. From classical compositions to jazz standards, each moment captivated with brilliance.

At the postconcert reception, attendees engaged with Mr. Marsalis and Maestro Guerrero, a moment filled with warmth and generosity. Mr. Marsalis shared thoughts on AI and music, highlighting student access to songwriting tools, while emphasizing the enduring human connection in music. Maestro Guerrero, from Nicaragua and raised in Costa Rica, described his musical upbringing with Mariachi and Julio Iglesias influences. Reflecting on his journey, he spoke passionately about jazz’s universal language and collaborating across genres, expressing gratitude for turning passion into livelihood, with classical music as his main interest. In candid sharing, both artists revealed themselves as exceptional musicians and remarkable human beings, enriching the audience with profound connection and inspiration.

We extend our sincerest appreciation to our co-host, the CSO African American Network. The CSO Latino Alliance stands as a beacon of inclusivity within the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, actively fostering representation and diversity. The Alliance contributes to a vibrant cultural tapestry while embracing growth and warmly welcoming new members. It serves as a testament to the transformative power of music, uniting communities and enriching lives.
