THE NEW YEAR

There’s something for everyone as we kick off 2020—including a gripping drama, a charming and romantic musical and an adventurous story for young audiences. Plan ahead!

Fireflies

A Playwight Who Explores Critical Moments in Black History

Playwright Donja R. Love has written a trilogy of plays that explore Black queer love at key moments in U.S. history. Grouped together, they are called The Love* Plays, but each stands on its own, connected thematically and through character lineage. The middle play, Fireflies, kicks off the new year on the Julianne Argyros Stage (Jan. 5-26, 2020). Set during the Civil Right Movement, the play centers around Charles, a charismatic leader of the movement, and Olivia, his eloquent, talented wife. As a church bombing rocks the South, Charles and Olivia must come to terms with not only the world around them, but also with issues closer to home. Read more about what inspires Love's writing in this article from the Lark Play Development Center.

NEW PLAY READING

NewSCRipts

Reminder: Next NewSCRipts Reading

The second NewSCRipts play reading of the season is on Monday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m., with Bekah Brunstetter’s The Ancient Order of Real Bearded Santas, an SCR commission. The story follows the monthly meetings of the Ancient Order of Real Bearded Santas, where the four members discuss the highs and lows of playing Santa Claus and more. But when a new Santa—Santa Tom—joins the group, he’s a bit too thin and far too gloomy for the role. And the truth about him may threaten the group’s very existence. Tickets are $12 in advance or at the door.
