Chilean poet Pablo Neruda’s evocative writing is the inspiration for Neruda Songs, Peter Lieberson’s heartbreakingly sensuous song cycle, performed by 2025/26 CSO Artist-in-Residence Joyce DiDonato and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. After the concert, join the Latino Alliance for a meet-and-greet with conductor Edward Gardner and Joyce DiDonato in Grainger Ballroom.

From Symphony Center to salsa floor: Finding community through music

A standout moment? Easy. The world premiere of Megalopolis Suite by Osvaldo Golijov. Before a single note, there was already electricity in the air — Golijov had asked for an “imperial” brass sound, and the CSO delivered. The magic only deepened knowing director Francis Ford Coppola was in the audience, hearing it come to life for the first time alongside everyone else. Composer, creator and crowd — completely in sync. I felt it, too — that sense of wonder, shared all at once.

Pedro’s also helped create magic behind the scenes, especially for kids. Through “Mini Maestros,” young audiences don tuxedo tails, grab batons and conduct their own ensembles. Watching curiosity turn into pure excitement? Unforgettable. (And yes — camera in hand, that’s one of my favorite moments to capture, too.)

His dream dinner? With Jessie Montgomery and Jimmy López — two brilliant voices shaping classical music today.

And when the concert ends? The rhythm doesn’t. From symphonies to salsa, DJing and even his own dance group, Pedro proves music isn’t just heard — it’s lived.

Bella Voce, Chicago’s acclaimed chamber choir specializing in historically informed performances, announces a pair of concerts exploring rarely heard choral works from the rich musical traditions of Guatemala and the broader Spanish colonial world.

Tomás Luis de Victoria’s masterwork Missa Ave maris stella will be paired with luminous Marian motets by Hernando Franco, Pedro Bermúdez and Francisco Guerrero. The program will also explore the vibrant villancicos from Guatemala, rooted in vernacular song and dance.
