Latino Alliance member spotlight: Pedro Guerrero

From Symphony Center to salsa floor: Finding community through music

By Ramiro J. Atristaín-Carrión, Founding Co-Chair, Emeritus, CSO Latino Alliance

Pedro Guerrero

I asked Pedro Guerrero, co-chair of the CSO Latino Alliance, what first sparked his involvement — and it all began with a voice that carried a lifetime of memories. Hearing Juan Diego Flórez live at Symphony Center wasn’t just a concert, it felt like a homecoming, he told me. Drawn in by the Latino Alliance (and a lucky ticket discount), he found himself surrounded by what felt like every Peruvian in Chicago — and with that, a deep sense of belonging. In a grand hall, the moment felt surprisingly intimate.

At its core, his love for classical music isn’t just about sound — it’s about togetherness. Whether it’s a symphony, salsa or merengue, there’s something powerful about sharing music — feeling it ripple through a crowd and connect strangers in a common emotional language.

A standout moment? Easy. The world premiere of Megalopolis Suite by Osvaldo Golijov. Before a single note, there was already electricity in the air — Golijov had asked for an “imperial” brass sound, and the CSO delivered. The magic only deepened knowing director Francis Ford Coppola was in the audience, hearing it come to life for the first time alongside everyone else. Composer, creator and crowd — completely in sync. I felt it, too — that sense of wonder, shared all at once.

Pedro’s also helped create magic behind the scenes, especially for kids. Through “Mini Maestros,” young audiences don tuxedo tails, grab batons and conduct their own ensembles. Watching curiosity turn into pure excitement? Unforgettable. (And yes — camera in hand, that’s one of my favorite moments to capture, too.)

His dream dinner? With Jessie Montgomery and Jimmy López — two brilliant voices shaping classical music today.

And when the concert ends? The rhythm doesn’t. From symphonies to salsa, DJing and even his own dance group, Pedro proves music isn’t just heard — it’s lived.
