Announcing Student Auditions at Seattle Children's Theatre!

Seattle Children’s Theatre is pleased to announce auditions for students ages 9-16 for our upcoming mainstage production of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz!

This coming April, SCT is presenting a new adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Jacqueline E. Lawton, adapted from the book by L. Frank Baum, and directed by Jéhan Òsanyìn.

This is not the ubiquitous RSC musical version of The Wizard of Oz, though the themes and story remain the same:

Growing tired of her life in Kansas, Dorothy and her dog Toto discover a new adventure in the wonderful and magical Land of Oz after a cyclone swoops them to the far away land. While following the yellow brick road to the Emerald City, Dorothy meets a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodman, and a Cowardly Lion, who quickly become her new friends. Together, they overcome their fears of witches, flying monkeys, and a haunted forest to learn if the Wizard can make their dreams come true.

Rehearsals begin Tuesday March 7th, 2023.

Tech rehearsals begin Saturday March 25th, 2023.

First Preview is Tuesday April 4th, 2023.

Opening is Friday April 7th, 2023.

Closing is Sunday May 21st, 2023.

WHAT TO PREPARE

1. The roles of the youth ensemble require movement and physical storytelling often without words. Please tell a story with your body that lasts about 45 seconds.

2. A one-minute monologue that best fits your personality.

If your child is interested in auditioning, please have them put a one-minute monologue on video, upload the video to Vimeo or a private YouTube page and send the link, with the password if necessary, to auditions@sct.org. Be sure to include the child’s full name, age, and grade when submitting. The deadline for submissions is Friday December 23rd at 3:00pm.

We will hold in-person callbacks at SCT on Saturday January 7th between 11:00am and 2:00pm.

You may also direct any questions about the show, auditions, or the process in general to auditions@sct.org.

For more information on our 2022/2023 Season, visit our website at sct.org.

We hope you’ll consider auditioning!

Important Schedule Information

REHEARSALS

Rehearsals will take place at SCT Tuesday-Friday afternoons from approximately 4:00pm-7:00pm so as not to interfere with school.

On Saturdays and Sundays, rehearsals take place from 10:00am-6:00pm. Actors may not be called for all rehearsal times, but should be available for rehearsal during those hours.

Tech rehearsals will take place from approximately 11:00am-9:30pm beginning March 25th, with students being called only for the evening sessions on Tuesday March 28th, Wednesday, March 29th, and Thursday March 30th.

Students will be called for the full rehearsal period on Friday March 31st and Saturday, April 1st.

If you anticipate any conflicts during the rehearsal period, please let us know. Conflicts won’t necessarily affect casting, but are needed for scheduling purposes.

PERFORMANCES

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has 11 performances per week. The general schedule is as follows:

Tuesdays—10:00am and 12:30pm

Wednesdays—10:30am

Thursdays—10:30am and 12:30pm

Fridays—10:30am and 7:00pm

Saturdays—1:00pm and 4:30pm

Sundays—11:00am and 2:30pm

We will have a few performances at 3:30pm on Wednesdays, but they will replace the Thursday evening performance for that week. The schedule is subject to change.

Student roles will be double cast, so each student will only perform 5 or 6 shows per week, including school-show performances in the mornings and afternoons Tuesdays through Fridays. The specific schedule for each cast will be set at a later date; most likely during the rehearsal period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this show only feature student actors?

No. There will be 7 professional adult actors playing the principle roles. The youth cast will rehearse and perform along with the adult cast.

What is a monologue?

monologue is a speech by a single character that can be used to share the character’s viewpoints or to explain something to the audience. A good monologue has a beginning, a middle, and an end and hopefully sees the character taking action or pursuing an immediate goal.

How many students are you hoping to cast?

There are five (5) roles for student performers in the show and we will be double-casting each role. This means we are searching for a total of ten (10) youth actors.

Is there compensation?

Yes! SCT considers this an educational opportunity for young actors interested in the process of professional theatre. As such, we are not offering a full salary for these roles. We will, however, provide each family with a stipend of $200 per week to help mitigate the costs of transportation to and from the theatre.
