Then and Now: Upstairs Downstairs

Foundation - Level 2
$15 per student
(Up to 60 students per day)
Learning areas: History, Critical and Creative Thinking and Personal and Social Capability.

Join our educators for a day out at Rippon Lea Estate in Elsternwick. Students will be transported back to the 1880s, a time when children should be seen and not heard, and before electricity! Throughout the day, students participate in four activities designed to highlight the similarities and differences between life in the 1800s and now. Students will discover the opulence of the Sargood family’s mansion, and in contrast, the hard work required of their 35 servants.

This full day program is a perfect introduction to history and learning about the past, it utilises object and place-based learning to encourage students to take part in history.

This program is also available at Como House (South Yarra) and Barwon Grange (Geelong).

Deep Time Stories

$12-15 per student with options for discounts (see below)
Learning areas: History, Geography, Science, and Critical and Creative Thinking.

Through hands-on archaeological digs at Geelong, South Yarra or in your own classroom, students discover how archaeologists use specific methodology to discover relics from the past, how to analyse archaeological finds, and how to determine what physical primary sources can tell us about the past.

Eligible schools are offered archaeology programs for free or at a subsidised cost, including subsidised transport costs. Complete this form and we will respond with a reduced quote for eligible schools. Contact the Education Team for more information. The National Trust of Australia (Vic) acknowledges the support of the Department of Education, Victoria, which makes this offer possible through the Strategic Partnerships Program.

Looking to learn more about archaeology and our archaeology education programs?

Join us on Saturday 18th May at Como House in South Yarra to hear a panel of archaeologists discuss a range of topics including heritage, and Aboriginal archaeology. After the panel, roll up your sleeves and join a NTV Dig Director who will guide participants at the simulated archaeological site. At this public event you’ll get a taste of the student archaeology program. Our Education Manager will be on site to answer any of your education questions.
