School Is Out!

Thank you for opening inviting Science World into your classroom and your teaching practice this year. Thank you for joining us for professional development either in-person or on Zoom. Thank you for booking a field trip or an online workshop, for watching our videos and trying our activities with your students.

In this week's newsletter we share our summer online offerings, this week's live science show info and the remarkable research from this year's Future Science Leaders.

THIS SUMMER FOR TEACHERS:

For educators interested in exploring computational thinking over the summer, we've developed new sessions to learn more about coding platforms. We'll share ideas for integrating computational thinking and coding into your practice. Code along with us every Thursday, 2–3:15pm PDT, in July!

- July 2: Scratch Along: interactive greeting card
- July 9: Twine Along: Choose your own adventure
- July 16: Micro:bit Along: Beta testing
- July 23: The Computational Thinking of Game Design
- July 30: Scratch Along: Create a video game

We are thrilled that the Vancouver cohort of STEAM Days of Summer is full! There are only a couple of spaces left for Prince George August 10-15. Apply Now

This summer for Kids:

Science World's dome may still be closed but we continue to offer opportunities for kids to wonder, create, explore and be inspired. This summer, families can join us online (all times PDT):

- Mondays, 10–11am, for ages 4–8
- Tuesdays, 10–11am, for ages 8–12
- Livestream science show Wednesdays, 2:20pm, for ages 3–103
- Tech-Up Thursdays, 11am–12pm, ages 9–14
- Free-choice Fridays (Pick from activities, Show Us Your Science videos, Fieldnotes articles and more!)

We're Excited to Share:

ROYGBIV Activities

To celebrate Pride Month we have produced new videos that explore the science of rainbows or have colourful consequences:

Polarizing Filters (pair this with Indoor Rainbows activity)

Capillary Action (K/1) Water On The Move (PK)
Today at 2:20: Locomotion Show

This week's live science show is presented by the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC) who are celebrating 100 years!

Tune in on facebook (or watch the show on YouTube tomorrow) to learn about the science of momentum, kinetic energy, and energy transformations.

Recently published research:

Throughout the year, Science World’s Future Science Leaders (FSL) had the opportunity to meet and work with our local network of fellows, facilitators and experts both onsite (at Vancouver and Surrey locations) as well as on several field trips to local labs.

In March, Future Science Leaders moved online with little disruption:

- Year 1 students developed infographics on important environmental topics such as changes to ocean currents, indigenous forestry practices and forest fires in BC.

- Year 2 students honed their academic writing skills and participated in our first ever Hack-A-Thon, where the students worked together to solve problems like growing food on mars, removing all plastic from the ocean and surviving an asteroid strike.

We are looking forward to welcoming more Future Science Leaders than ever in the fall, with over 100 students offered places in the 2020-2021 program.

Check out the eSTEAMed Journal, a collection of in-depth scientific research papers written by FSL students, now published online:

Year 2 engineering stream:

A comparative analysis of aerodynamic characteristics between two-wing planform models

Deep learning based object detection application for fire recognition in video

Can surface tension be used to create a debris free rain gutter?

Different methods of coffee ground fertilizer application and their effects on plant growth

Investigating the viability of a piezoelectric insole to harvest kinetic energy

Year 2 research stream:

Testing effectiveness of affordable non-toxic mordants and modifiers on cotton dyed from the skins of yellow onions and skins and pits of avocados

Year 3:
Development of an EOG Classification System for SCI Prosthetic Hand Movement

FSL supported the West Vancouver Environmental Science Academy to publish their research:
