THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL OHC

During OHC weekend, 1,200 dedicated volunteers helped showcase 118 sites across the city to more than 100,000 visits. With virtual programs and self-guided tours, participants explored Chicago all month long. If you tell us about your experience by November 8, you can enter for a chance to win a CAC Friends & Family membership!

NEWHOUSE IS TURNING 40!

In 2022, CAC will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Newhouse Student Design Competition. Over the decades, thousands of high school students have created projects to solve real-world problems while diving into the worlds of architecture, construction, engineering and design. This year’s Newhouse Competition theme concentrates students’ efforts on projects to create a child-friendly Chicago.

A child-friendly Chicago goes beyond only young people to add value to all citizens’ lives. Time spent outdoors and connections to nature, the ability to get around independently, opportunities to build community connections, access to healthy food and exercise and more contribute to the economic value and long-term viability of the urban environment for everyone.

The Competition website will launch in early December, with youth projects due April 22, 2022. In the meantime, reach out to us at newhouse@architecture.org with questions, or if you would like to participate.

The Old Post Office

THE OLD POST OFFICE TOUR

From CAC Docent Lorie Westerman

The newest CAC walking tour takes visitors to one of Chicago's most iconic buildings: the Old Post Office. The first sections of the Post Office were designed with a focus on parcel post because of the overwhelming growth of Sears and Chicago's other mail order companies. By the time it was completed in 1934 it was the largest Post Office building in the world.

The Old Post Office tour demonstrates how the collaboration between farsighted developers and inspired architects can transform an abandoned building into a modern office that retains hints of the past. Included in the tour are the Art Deco lobby and 80,000 square feet of tenant amenities. Tours of the Old Post Office will start November 9 and continue on Tuesdays at 11am.

Arquitina Attendees

ARQUITINA PROGRAM RECAP

On October 21, 75 guests joined CAC as we hosted the launch of the newly published book, "Latinas in Architecture" in conjunction with Arquitina, a network of Latina architects. Founded by Chicago architect Alicia Ponce, the group aims to provide powerful networking support and increase the 1% of architects made up by Latinas. The launch featured brief remarks by many of the 16 women whose stories are highlighted in the book - some attending from as far away as Mexico City and California. Music by the Mexican trio “Flor de Piel” rounded out the function. CAC Girls Build! participants were on hand to host.

SUPPORT THE CAC

If you enjoy the CAC’s offerings, please consider making a donation to support our non-profit mission!
