Science World for Schools

Welcome back, educators. We hope you had a fantastic summer break and are adjusting to the new normal at school and in your classrooms.

We are excited to share the following FREE offerings and opportunities to support classes across British Columbia:

  • Virtual Workshops
  • Learning Kits
  • Professional Learning Events
In an abundance of caution during the current pandemic, Science World has made the difficult decision to suspend field trips to our facility and will support schools virtually in Fall 2020.

Virtual Workshops

Using your district learning platform (or hosted on Zoom), Tech-Up facilitators lead a session for your students with multiple activities to support learning. Check for specific workshop technology requirements.

BEE BOT BOP
Grades 2–4

Students will understand the fundamentals of coding and how robots work by programming a virtual bee robot and then getting it to complete a series of challenges. Following the workshop, students will 'bee' confident to complete further coding challenges independently.

DISCOVER OZOBOTS
Grades 4–7

This workshop will introduce students to the basics of coding by using a virtual Ozobot emulator. Students will work through a series of challenges on Shape Tracer, a simulated environment. Physical Ozobots are not necessary but can be used. Best for students new to coding.

SAY IT WITH SCRATCH
Grades 4–7

This workshop will introduce students to the basics of Scratch as they work to create an interactive greeting card. Following an I do - We do - You do model, we will work towards building a project that will use motion, looks, sound, backgrounds and events. Best for students with some experience with block coding.

MARVELOUS MICRO:BITS
Grades 7–9

This workshop will introduce students to coding with random generators and arrays within Micro:bit Classroom. This workshop will cover basics, variables, arrays and inputs and leaves room for possible further extension. This workshop can be done entirely using the online simulator if no physical micro:bit is available.

Learning Kits

Written to support distance learning but also useful for physically distanced teaching, a Tech-Up Learning Kit contains resources for both synchronous and/or asynchronous lessons.

The teacher guide walks you through leading student activities over a series of sessions of approximately 30-45 minutes. Students receive handouts with activities they can work through at their own pace, or as assigned, according to your own timeline and discretion.

Tech-Up Learning Specialists are available to support you with these kits:

  • Active Algorithms (Grades 1–3)
  • Variable Stores (Grades 4–6)
  • Coding Math (Grades 4–6)
  • Micro:bit (Grades 6–9)

Upcoming Pro-D

SCRATCH ED MEETUP – CANADA-WIDE EDITION
Sept 25, 11:30am–1pm PDT

A Scratch Educator Meetup is a gathering of Scratch Educators who want to share their ideas and strategies for supporting creative computing as they learn with and from each other.

What will we be doing at the meetup?

  1. We start with networking, getting to know fellow attendees, and sharing what people want to explore during the meetup.

  2. We collaboratively decide how to structure our learning and then form small groups based on our different interests. Maybe you want to have a discussion about classroom strategies or get more practice with Scratch—or something else entirely. Feel free to move between groups if the session that you're in isn't working for you.

  3. We gather as a whole group for reflection and group sharing. You might pose a question to discuss with the group, or share something from your classroom. This is a great time to inspire and be inspired!

SCIENCE WORLD TEACHER'S SERIES

For educators interested in exploring computational thinking, we've developed new sessions to learn more about coding platforms. We'll share ideas for integrating computational thinking and coding into your practice. Code along with us every Wednesday, 3:45–5pm PDT.
