For the month of November, we welcome Gaurii S Kumaar to the Green-Mezzanine Gallery!

Gaurii S Kumaar is a multidisciplinary artist whose art practice encompasses three key activities: 2D paintings, 3D sculptures, and art mindfulness workshops. Through these creative channels, Kumaar explores the nature of belonging, inviting audiences to reconsider cultural narratives and their personal connections to these themes.

Kumaar holds a Master’s in Landscape Architecture, additional studies in Visual Communication from UT Arlington, and a B Arch from Pune University, India. Working out of her studio in the Tin District of West Dallas, has showcased her work at notable venues, including the Amarillo Art Museum biennial, Latino Arts Center, and the Smithsonian-affiliated Irving Arts Center.

This collection, Guided by Legacy, delves into the nature of belonging within India’s traditional caste system and inheritance practices, explored through the lens of Eastern narratives, astrology, and fate.

"The 2D drawings/ paintings on paper or canvas emerge from a visceral response to the morally complex realities of life: birth, death, rebirth, and the tension between free will and predestination. This series confronts ongoing cultural and physical boundaries established by one’s place, date, and time of birth.

As I expand my practice into 3D objects, the exploration has deepened into physical contemplation and materialization of Indian heritage and cultural symbolism. These social sculptures reflect themes of hierarchy, entanglement, and control—expressed through ancestral artifacts, such as woven cotswhile confronting disparities of inheritance and caste." — Excerpts from Kumaar's artist statement.

A "First Fridays" reception has been scheduled for Friday, November 7. Join us for light bites and meet the artist from 6-8 PM on the second floor of the Eisemann Center lobby.

The gallery is free to view and open to the public every Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm and during all public events.
