Cecile McLorin Salvant: Ogresse

"Epic and intimate, full of unexpected detours. Virtually everything about it is staggeringly original."
— Wall Street Journal

Cécile McLorin Salvant's 'Ogresse'

w/ 13-Piece Ensemble arranged & conducted by Darcy James Argue

WED, MAR 11 · 8PM
PARAMOUNT THEATRE

Vocalist, composer, and 3-time GRAMMY winner Cécile McLorin Salvant performs the West Coast premiere of her new original song cycle created with arranger and conductor Darcy James Argue. Ogresse is a romantic “fairytale-like” story that brings together Salvant's her interests in musical theater, mythology and visual art, while touching on French jazz, classical, blues, and more. Comprised of top-tier jazz musicians and a string ensemble, the New York Music Daily calls the groundbreaking work "spine-tingling ... worth seeing twice."

"Ripped from Caribbean folklore, gothic fairy tales and Salvant’s roiling subconscious, the racially charged song cycle recounts the disquieting story of the outcast “chocolate brown” ogresse."
— SF Chronicle Datebook
