Today marks the 108th anniversary of the Paramount Theatre!
On October 11, 1915, the Paramount – originally known as the Majestic – had its grand opening with a vaudeville program that included an episode of Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist” and a performance of “A Novel Marriage.” Tickets for the theatre’s inaugural performances went on sale four days in advance, and lifelong Austinite Hettie Kinney (1858-1928) was first in line to purchase. On opening night, Kinney was first in line to enter the theatre and take her seat.
When the Majestic observed its 10th anniversary, the Austin American-Statesman celebrated Kinney’s patronage, noting that she kept the program from the opening night and considered it as one of her most treasured valuables. Kinney remained a regular patron until her death in 1928, enjoying many live performances and becoming a fan of the movies.
As we celebrate today, we remain grateful to the Austin community for continuing to find a seat in our theatre for live shows and films. You are a part of the decades of dedicated patrons like Kinney that have helped us reach this anniversary each year.
In the spirit of Hettie Kinney, help celebrate another year of the Paramount with a gift today! Your support preserves our historic theatre, ensures we remain open for generations to come, and recognizes us as one of 13 beloved local businesses open for 20+ years during Preservation Austin’s first-ever Legacy Business Month (Oct. 1-30).

Austin’s favorite fall film spectacle is back for its milestone 30th year! The Austin Film Festival furthers the art of storytelling by championing the work of screenwriters – and there has never been a more important time to celebrate the great work of great writers. You’ll need a badge for priority film access, but AFF is also opening up single tickets for many screenings at our theatres, featuring major films that will surely be part of next year’s Oscar race.
That includes new work from PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN’s Emerald Fennell (SALTBURN) and SIDEWAYS’ Alexander Payne (THE HOLDOVERS), along with festival standouts like AMERICAN FICTION (starring “Westworld’s” Jeffrey Wright) and THE BIKERIDERS (starring Tom Hardy and ELVIS’s Austin Butler).
