Hugh DeWitte

For the month of September, we welcome Hugh DeWitte back to the Green-Mezzanine Gallery!

Hugh is a Dallas based artist whose art has been exhibited in both private and corporate collections around the world. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kansas City Art Institute and has studied under graphic design Victor Papanek, one of the twentieth century's most influential pioneers of design. Hugh also apprenticed with internationally acclaimed large-scale sculptor, Dale Eldred, renowned for works emphasizing both natural and generated light.

DeWitte's latest collection, Listening to the Land, is an invitation to peer into the countless lives that journey across the landscapes depicted in these multi-media pieces. The paintings are brought to life using historical land deeds, handwritten letters, ledgers and sheet music peeking out through the layers of color. Details marked with pencil add a sense of immediacy and emotion to the work. The collection brings out the stories etched into the land it was inspired by: landscapes from around the world.

Also featured in this collection are assemblages of found objects such as antique farming, blacksmithing, and land surveying tools. These story boxes bring historical craftsmanship into contemporary expressions of art.

"Together, these elements chronicle humanity's fleeting presence on earth, juxtaposed with the land’s enduring essence. As the sun rises and sets, we become part of the land’s history, a testament to our brief moment in time."

Hugh's other works and contact information for commissions and other inquiries can be found on his website linked here.

A "First Fridays" reception has been scheduled for Friday, September 5. Join us for light bites and meet the artist from 6-8 PM on the second floor of the Eisemann Center lobby.
