New jewelry line is inspired by HoMA artworks

Handcrafted necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings and a brooch echo Museum works and are exclusively available at the HoMA Shop

HONOLULU, HAWAI‘I—New in the Honolulu Museum of Art Shop is a line by Gamar Jewellery inspired by artworks in its collection.

Guests will find elegant necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings and a brooch that echo the colors and compositions of Georgia O’Keeffe’s lush painting of Maui’s ‘Iao Valley, Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic print Great Wave off Kanagawa, Theodore Wores’ portrait of Lizzie Victor, known as The Lei Maker, and the 11th-century Chinese sculpture of Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion.

“I selected artworks based on their importance within the museum and broader culture of Hawai‘i, as well as their design possibilities,” says Lauren Salm, founder and designer of Gamar.

Salm, who divides her time between Honolulu and Paris, spent time at HoMA sketching details and forms of each artwork. She then took the sketches to India to select gemstones that reflect the colors and textures of the art and work with a family-run jeweler to transform the designs into handmade pieces.

Salm determined how to set the stones in metal and connect the pieces to best honor the unique feel of each artwork. The results are striking works of wearable art sparkling with gems such as tourmaline, amethyst, aquamarine, topaz, and lapis lazuli.

Prices range from $250 to $3,600.
