Hume Cronyn & Jessica Tandy, Allen Nause & Vana O'Brien, Dick Van Dyke & Mary Tyler Moore and Charles Durning & Julie Harris playing Weller and Fonsia in "The Gin Game."

Nause and O’Brien join a long list of amazing actors in The Gin Game

In his autobiography Dick Van Dyke said learning the lines of The Gin Game was one of the hardest things he had ever done.  Van Dyke played Weller alongside Mary Tyler Moore as Fonsia in the 2003 made-for-television version on PBS.

Allen Nause agrees and said this play has been one of the biggest challenges of his acting career. He said while the lines and emotions required are demanding, it is the choreography of the cards and the games played that makes this production unique.

“There’s no other play like it,” Nause said in an interview with Marty Hughley of The Oregonian. “You think of the classic Aristotelian play – it has exposition, antagonism, rising action, falling action, all that stuff. But in this, the form is 15 games of gin.” Click here to read the rest of the preview article.

Van Dyke and Moore, Nause and O’Brien are among a long list of award-winning actors that have played the card-playing duo on stage and television since the play’s Broadway premiere in 1977 starring Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn. With this dynamic duo at its helm, the play was an immediate hit, garnering four Tony award nominations: Best Play, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director. In 1978, it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 1997, the play was revived on Broadway, starring Charles Durning and Julie Harris. Once again, The Gin Game was a stunning success and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Production of a Revival. Since its premiere, The Gin Game has been performed in virtually every theatre-going country in the world.

Tobias Andersen reprises work created with fiction writer Ray Bradbury

The Illustrated Bradbury is a one-actor play created by the late Ray Bradbury, with tales inspired by the 1951 classic book about a man covered with animated tattoos. There are nine narratives in this re-mastered 'living anthology' selected from over 500 of the author's stories published from 1940-1990.

The celebrated and venerable Tobias Andersen, who has been seen in more than seven Artists Rep productions over the years, performs each of these tales, playing 15 characters with such diversity the audience will soon forget it is a one-man show.

Bradbury and Andersen collaborated to create this stage piece, which has now been streamlined to suit Andersen's acting style with even more aplomb.

Since the Theater!Theatre! arena stage space is coming to a close, this may be the only chance Portland audiences will get to see this show.

The Illustrated Bradbury

EXTENDED! Mother Teresa is Dead at Portland Playhouse

Young wife and mother Jane (Nikki Weaver), gripped by personal and moral crisis, flees her family and her home in the UK without word. Jane’s husband (Chris Harder) discovers her recuperating in rural India, cared for by an English expat artist (Gretchen Corbett) and counseled by an attractive, Oxford-educated Indian do-gooder.

In this stirring play about love, choice, and personal responsibility in a global age, acclaimed British playwright Helen Edmundson urges us to consider how we set our own priorities.

Don't miss this thought-provoking, emotionally charged play that has been selling out at almost every performance. The Oregonian calls Mother  Teresa  "One of the must-see shows of the Portland theatre season."
