Latino Alliance member spotlight: Jesús del Toro

Between notes and words: the rhythm of Jesús del Toro

By Ramiro J. Atristaín-Carrión, Founding Co-Chair, Emeritus, CSO Latino Alliance

Jesús del Toro

For Jesús del Toro, music has always been more than sound — it is a guiding force, a source of knowledge and a bridge between cultures. His connection to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Latino Alliance grew naturally from a lifelong passion for classical music and a desire to connect with others who share that love.

Jesús is a journalist, editor of La Raza, poet and author of a biographical book on Silvestre Revueltas, the celebrated Mexican composer who studied in Chicago in the 1930s. This is in addition to the poetry books he has published.

From the beginning, he saw the Latino Alliance as more than a community — it was a chance to encourage greater Latino representation in classical music. For him, it is essential that more Latinos not only attend performances, but also play, participate and belong to these spaces.

When I asked him to describe his love for classical music in one sentence, Jesús shared: “Classical music is an inner force that regulates many of my intellectual activities. Through music, I find new knowledge and perspectives — it inspires and produces ideas.”

One unforgettable CSO moment for him was hearing Sensemayá by Revueltas during a program featuring works by Maurice Ravel and Samuel Barber. The surprise inclusion made the experience especially meaningful.

If he could have dinner with any conductor, Jesús would choose Esa-Pekka Salonen, who collaborates with the CSO and is creative director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Jesús admires Salonen’s vision of bringing local and relevant contemporary composers into the orchestras he leads, creating a stronger connection between music, place and community.

Behind the scenes, Jesús loves helping shape the Nuestras noches series — selecting concerts and experiences that resonate with Latino audiences. Beyond music, poetry, literature and journalism continue to inspire him. We are lucky to have him as a dedicated Advisory Board member of the CSO Latino Alliance.
