First ever special needs symposium sheds new light on new opportunities
In November, Birmingham Hippodrome hosted a unique one-day symposium designed for those working with young people with learning disabilities or a broad spectrum of special needs. Stages of Transition, inspired by the work of the theatre’s Education Team, was the first symposium of its kind to highlight the collaboration between shyster.inc a small Midlands organisation and Birmingham Hippodrome, the UK’s most popular theatre.
Stages of Transition looked at the worrying levels of youth unemployment in the UK, the highest since 1992; and, in particular, how this impacts on vulnerable young people with learning disabilities. Delegates committed to work in collaboration to support and enable youngsters to seek employment by offering training places and teaching opportunities.

Stage Appeal News
Fundraising efforts towards the massive £1million target are going well and we hope to be halfway by Christmas! Our stage is at the heart of everything we do, allowing us to put on the very best productions from the very best companies worldwide and earning us the reputation of No. 1 theatre outside of London, an accolade that we are all very proud to be able to bring to the Midlands.
There are lots of ways for you to play your part, most importantly when you buy a ticket between now and August 2012 you will be asked for a small ‘top up’ donation – if you can afford to, please say yes. If everybody who buys a ticket from now on gives us a ‘top up’ we could raise nearly £200,000! Also, don’t forget to say yes to Gift Aid, it makes a huge difference to us at no extra cost to you.
You can find out more on how to support the Stage Appeal HERE.
One of the biggest things that you can do to support the Stage Appeal doesn’t cost a thing – we want to get people thinking and talking about what the theatre means to them. Have you had a memorable experience here? Does coming here mean something to you especially? Why should people continue to support the arts in this economic climate? Why should you support the Stage Appeal?
Most of all we want to know - what does the stage mean to you?
