Summer with the Symphony Brings the Heat

Spice up your summer with a spectrum of thrilling programming with the San Francisco Symphony, from hit films with live orchestra and classical favorites, to spectacular performances with musical icons.

Kick off the summer season with the joy of timeless music as Bay Area native and SF Symphony Youth Orchestra alumnus Alexi Kenney makes his SF Symphony debut in Sibelius’ impassioned Violin Concerto. “This piece is singular in the way Sibelius creates drama, pitting the soloist against the orchestra in ways that feel at once elemental and extremely human,” Kenney shared. “It’s this sense of contrast—of subtlety versus bombast, man versus nature, orchestra versus soloist—that makes this piece such a powerful experience to listen to.” Also on the program: Dvořák's American and Bohemian-flavored New World Symphony

Before you see the newly released sequel, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, relive the magic and excitement of the original blockbuster adventure Raiders of the Lost Ark on the silver screen with John Williams’ epic score performed live by the San Francisco Symphony. “I must say that the experience of composing the music for this film, and for the subsequent installments in the series, was a very happy one, and offered me a wild and truly joyous ride,” Williams has observed.

Then, experience two singular performances where the exhilarating rush of a full orchestra and the music of today’s hottest stars combine. Composer, conductor, producer, DJ, arranger, songwriter, singer, and pianist Steve Hackman uses his wide-ranging abilities to create innovative fusions that blur the lines between high and pop art. Experience Hackman’s seamless amalgamation of Tchaikovsky and Drake in a concert with the San Francisco Symphony this month. (For a sneak peek at Tchaikovsky X. Drake, check out this video). Treat yourself to a summer finale with a showcase of hits from Grammy-winning soul star Maxwell, a groundbreaking artist famed for redefining the genre and giving rise to the neo-soul movement.
