Celebrating 10 years of the CSO Latino Alliance

A Note from Latino Alliance Advisory Board co-chair Ramiro J. Atristaín-Carrión

What a night for the first Nuestras noches event! And there are many more to come.

At our first event on Thursday, October 24, Juan Dies and Sones de Mexico Ensemble brought the rich tapestry of Mexican folkloric traditions and Afro-Cuban music to life in a memorable evening at Symphony Center. Audiences were transported to a world of vibrant rhythms and cultural resonance by the CSO’s performance of 20th-century composer Silvestre Revueltas’ Sensemayá, inspired by the Cuban poet Nicolás Guillén’s poem of the same title.

The evening began with Afro-Mexican dances that set the stage for a deep exploration of Revueltas’ work. A thought-provoking discussion was led by Jesús del Toro, an expert on the subject and a founding member of the CSO Latino Alliance. In a Q&A, del Toro explained the composer’s influence on the music landscape and the historical context of his compositions, which added depth to the experience.

As we look ahead, the CSO Latino Alliance has an exciting lineup of events:

  • December 17, the festive Noche navideña ushers in the holiday season.
  • January 26, at Instituto Cervantes, A decade of Nuestras noches celebrates the Latino Alliance journey.
  • Saturday, February 17, Una tarde en familia featuring the CSO for Kids presentation of Carnival of the Animals offers a delightful musical journey for the entire family.
  • Thursday, April 25, music enthusiasts can look forward to Noche de jazz, featuring a rare collaboration between the CSO and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.
  • And, finally, on Tuesday, June 11, Noche española presents Ravel’s iconic Boléro, a captivating conclusion to the series.

As we anticipate these upcoming events, we encourage you to secure tickets for this extraordinary series. Don’t miss the chance to be a part of the networking receptions and the enchanting musical experiences brought to life by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
