New Year, New Show (With Old Friends)

We kick off 2022 with the world premiere of The North Star on January 14th! This gentle coming-of-age fable, based on the book by Peter H. Reynolds, is a dance-inspired adaptation with script and lyrics by Jennifer Kirkeby and music by James Lekatz. The production marks our ninth collaboration with Escalate Dance. Our first collaboration was Owl Moon in 2013. Since then we have created seven more pieces together, giving both our audiences and youth performers a chance to experience a story told primarily through dance.

The music and dance, specifically crafted for young audiences, amplifies the beauty of the story, creating a world where everything is possible. For many of our audiences, it is the first time they have seen a story told in this way, and witnessing their reactions is beautiful.” - Artistic Director and Co-Director of The North Star, Sandy Boren-Barrett

Tickets for The North Star are available now. The show runs through February 13.

New Year, New Employee

With the new year comes new initiatives in Outreach and Access with the hiring of Kallie Jo Hollman as Access Coordinator. Kallie Jo is a Stages’ alumnus, who acted and worked backstage with us as a young person. Since then, she earned her theatre degree from Concordia University and her Advanced Certificate in Disability Studies through CUNY. She has a passion for arts access, first sparked by growing up with her older brother who is Autistic and seeing the ways he was barred from participating, just because he experienced the world differently than others. Kallie Jo says, “I want to make sure that every person has the opportunity to feel the love, joy, and magic of live theatre and to celebrate the spectrum of all abilities.” Stepping into her new role, Kallie Jo has been impressed by the established access work Stages has done but is ready to expand and grow our programming. She is currently working on forming an Access Committee and forging new partnerships with local disability organizations to bring creative ways to ensure access for everyone.

Winter Acting Classes at Stages Theatre Company

New Year, New Session

Our Education Department is ready for the new year, too. The Winter Session of our School Year Program starts the week of January 10. The new session offers creative play for our youngest students ages 3-5, age-appropriate acting classes for grades K-3, and actor and musical theatre training in our Junior and Teen Conservatory for grades 4-12. Winter session is a chance to meet new friends, explore new skills, and create new stories. Registration is now open. The new year is also busy for our Stages teaching staff, Andre Samples, Laura Mahler, and Trudy Monette with new semesters starting at our partner schools FAIR Pilgrim Lane, FAIR Crystal, and FAIR High School for Arts. And right around the corner on February 1 is the registration kick-off for Summer Theatre Workshops 2022. Stay tuned!
