A Note to Alumni


We're a month out from our final Next Up concert with Makiko Hirata (Conservatory '12) and our first alumni reunion on campus. Please be sure to RSVP and let us know you're coming. If you haven't heard yet, we recently announced our new expansion project: The Colburn Center. Our expanded footprint in downtown LA will be a game changer in the performing arts scene. Learn more about our future plans.

We are happy to announce that the Colburn School will be participating in Unite for Ukraine, a free virtual benefit concert to honor and support the people of Ukraine. Our students will join young artists from Cleveland Institute of Music, Curtis Institute of Music, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, New World Symphony, The Royal Conservatory of Music, and San Francisco Conservatory of Music to help support organizations providing humanitarian aid, supplies and transportation, and medical services in the region. The Viano String Quartet (Conservatory '21) will be featured with the Curtis portion of the program. The concert will be streamed on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 12 pm PST/3 pm EST via the Violin Channel, and you can find the feed on our Facebook page as well.

On April 27, Kyle Kremer (Conservatory '15) and a brass quintet from the Colburn Conservatory of Music will present our penultimate Next Up concert, Celestial Suite: Combining Astronomy and Music. Join us for the performance, which will also feature stunning projections of the cosmos, followed by a reception on the terrace with telescope viewing and treats. Register for free today!

Building the Future of Music and Dance in the Heart of Los Angeles

The Colburn School is pleased to announce plans for a transformational new addition to our downtown Los Angeles campus. Colburn Joins Music Conservatories Across North America Present Virtual Concert to Benefit Ukraine

A group of top independent music conservatories and professional training programs in the United States and Canada have come together to present Unite for Ukraine, a free virtual benefit concert to honor and support the people of Ukraine. Young artists from the eight organizations—Cleveland Institute of Music, Colburn School, Curtis Institute of Music, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, New World Symphony, The Royal Conservatory of Music, and San Francisco Conservatory of Music—will perform in an online benefit concert, introduced by celebrated violinist, activist, and educator Midori.

Hosted by The Violin Channel at theviolinchannel.com, the concert will be streamed on Saturday, April 16th, 2022, at 12 pm PST/3 pm EST. During the concert, viewers will be able to make donations to support organizations providing humanitarian aid, supplies and transportation, and medical services to the people of Ukraine.

The Conservatory Concerto Competition winner gives a dazzling performance of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto. Vaughan Williams’ serene fifth symphony and an operatic overture from Weber complete the program.

The Colburn Orchestra is generously underwritten by Eva and Marc Stern.

Music Academy Senior Recital

April 23 | 5 pm | Thayer Hall

Years of dedicated practice and performance culminate in a dazzling display by graduating students.

Academy Virtuosi

April 24 | 2 pm | Zipper Hall

This elite conductorless chamber orchestra comprised of talented young musicians brings to life works by Tchaikovsky, Weinberg, and Vivaldi as well as a composition by Music Academy alumnus and current Conservatory of Music student Ezra Shcolnik.

Master Class: Dunedin Consort, Baroque

April 25 | 5 pm | Thayer Hall

In this illustrated lecture, Professor John Butt and Dunedin Consort explore the concept of historically informed performance and its relevance in the modern musical landscape in a practical and discursive format. Drawing on his seminal book Playing with History, Professor Butt considers issues including the relationship between notation and performance, examining the ways in which we ascribe ‘meaning’ to musical texts, and how these ideas are affected by composers adapting the same music for new occasions.

Next Up: Celestial Suite, Combining Astronomy and Music

April 27 | 7 pm | Thayer Hall

“Celestial Suite” explores the work of five astronomers: Nicholas Copernicus, Galileo Galilee, Isaac Newton, Edwin Hubble, and Stephen Hawking. Set against visuals from real astronomical images, each movement features narrator Kyle Kremer drawing connections between music and science. Following the performance, the audience is invited to join Kyle for an informal Q&A and telescope viewing of the night sky.

Faculty Recital: Harvey Pittel, Saxophone

April 29 | 7 pm | Thayer Hall

Experience the talent and creativity of Colburn’s distinguished faculty artists as they take the stage to perform their own curated performances. This concert features work by Jacques Ibert, Paul Creston, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Jimmy Dorsey, and more.

Next Up: Celestial Suite, Combining Astronomy and Music with Kyle Kremer, April 27

Join us for a unique presentation of music and the stars. Kyle Kremer (Conservatory '15) will host a performance of James Stephenson's Celestial Suite by members of the Conservatory brass students with stunning projections of the cosmos. All guests are invited to join us for a reception following the event for an informal Q&A and telescope viewing of the night sky. Concert and reception are free with registration!

Amplify Series: Marlon Martinez, Double Bass

In case you missed it, jazz virtuoso bassist and Colburn Conservatory alumnus Marlon Martinez presented a thrilling tribute to jazz icon Billy Strayhorn last month. In a concert emceed by Classical KUSC announcer Alan Chapman, Marlon’s big band Marlonius Jazz Orchestra revived lesser known and newly discovered works. The program included tunes like Take the “A” Train, Rhapsody in Blue, Chelsea Bridge, Pretty Girl, and more.

Also featured on the program was a filmed work, choreographed by Colburn Dance Dean and Amplify artist Silas Farley. The ballet is set to significant recordings of piano pieces by Strayhorn.

Above: Kevin Lin (Conservatory '15) and Austin Huntington (Conservatory '16) recently completed the Carmel Marathon in Carmel, Indiana. Kevin placed 490th and Austin placed 404th!

Geneva Lewis (Community School '16) has been selected as a 2022 Borletti-Buitoni Trust award recipient. Read more.

Jung-Eun (Jenny) Ahn (Conservatory '12) has joined as a section violin member at the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Eric Byers (Conservatory '05) recorded Bach's Cello Suite No. 6 in the Pompeian Room of the Doheny Mansion in Los Angeles for the Da Camera Society. Watch now.

Ben Ullery (Conservatory '11) and Dominic Cheli (Conservatory '19) performed Rebecca Clarke's Viola Sonata in March, and you can watch the full performance here.

Simone Porter (Conservatory '19) will perform the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto for two nights with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra.
