FESTIVAL NEWS

THE OLD MAID AND THE THIEF:
 A RADIO OPERA

The artists from Lyric Opera of Chicago's Ryan Opera Center bring their vocal prowess and acting chops to the forefront in this comic caper that takes place in small-town America in the 1930s. Setting the scene in the role of The Narrator is the Emmy Award-winning Chicago broadcaster, Ron Magers.

One of the earliest operas composed specifically for radio, Gian Carlo Menotti's The Old Maid and the Thief  was commissioned by NBC as part of its orchestra's season finale in 1939. Beloved by audiences, its popularity made Menotti a household name.

Just like millions listened to this witty tale on their living room radios in the 1940s, join us tomorrow night as we gather at the Pritzker Pavilion, enjoying the sounds of the Grant Park Orchestra, connecting us all through the power of music.

CARMINA BURANA:
OUR EPIC SEASON FINALE

The 2018 season comes to a thrilling close with Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, one of the most powerful symphonic works ever written, featuring the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus and an all-star line-up of guest soloists.

"It's one of the most popular choral pieces on the planet," said the Festival's Chorus Director, Christopher Bell, noting that "the Chorus will be the largest of the summer, and has the powerful sound that makes the opening of this piece sound spectacular."

That opening movement, "O Fortuna," has been heard in films, television shows, and advertisements over the years. Check out some popular ads that feature this enduring work.

Then, don't miss our final concert, as we lift our voices to celebrate another summer of great music in Chicago.

A CLASSIC CHICAGO BENEFIT

On Wednesday, October 17, gather with Carlos Kalmar, Christopher Bell and Chicago’s civic leaders and cultural elite for a festive evening of musical entertainment at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park for the Grant Park Music Festival’s annual Advocate for the Arts Awards Benefit

Your attendance will help to support the Festival’s ten weeks of classical music concerts in Millennium Park, as well as all of the artistic and community engagement activities that the Festival presents each year through its education and outreach initiative, Festival Connect.

Highlights of the evening include performances by violinist William Hagen, who made his Festival debut in June, and the Festival’s Project Inclusion String Quartet, who spent the summer on stage with the Grant Park Orchestra in Millennium Park, as well as in concert as a chamber ensemble in parks throughout the city.

This year’s Advocate for the Arts Awards will be given to Hanna Holborn Gray, President Emeritus of the University of Chicago, and WFMT, a longtime partner of the Grant Park Music Festival. Each year, the Advocate for the Arts Awards are given to those who have exhibited outstanding leadership and commitment to Chicago’s cultural landscape and the arts.
