Nature's gifts

Nature rewards us in every season. We look to nature – our feathered friends at the bird feeders, and the delicate botanical wonders sprouting at our feet – to provide awe and encouragement in this unique, trying time.

For now, the museum is temporarily closed in accordance with Government of Ontario directives. We miss our visitors, and look forward to welcoming you all back.

Beetle named after iconic Canadian rock band

The beetle seen on the left is named after the popular Canadian rock band, The Tragically Hip. In 2003, entomologist Andrew Smith, Ph.D., discovered a new beetle species among the museum’s collections and named it Platycoelia hiporum in honour of “The Hip” whose music he was frequently playing while working in the lab. Beetles make up the majority of the museum’s one-million-plus insect collection. This specimen, about 30 mm in length, was collected in Colombia in 1990.
