Dear Music Maker Haciendo Música families,

While our afterschool programs have officially wrapped up, the Bravo! Vail staff is brimming with excitement and anticipation for the upcoming Bravo! Vail Music Festival, running from June 20 to August 1. Experiencing live music is the greatest way to inspire the young musician in your life.

There are numerous opportunities for all ages to participate in the Festival. From our youngest audience members aged 2-7 at Little Listeners @ the Library, or at the Instrument Petting Zoo at Eagle Flight Days on June 29. Our developing musicians will continue their education through Summer Intensive, Young Musicians Day, and at the returning Presto Club presented during select Orchestra Concerts.

Summer is also a great time to start Private Music Lessons. How do you know if your student is ready? If a student is going to their instrument on a regular basis (almost every day) or you notice they cannot get enough music in their life or you have received a recommendation from their class teacher, then you may want to explore weekly private lessons. These are typically 30-60 minutes of time with an expert in their instrument that will provide technique, exercises, and pieces suited to advance your students abilities at a much quicker pace than the class environment. Check out our recommendations in this issue.

Bravo! Vail Presto Club

Enhance your child’s concert experience! Bravo! Vail Presto Club is an opportunity for students ages 8-14 to gather at select Orchestral Series concerts to socialize, engage with a designed interactive booklet during concerts, and participate in curated, post-concert Artist Meet & Greet opportunities. Students will be under the care and supervision of Education & Engagement staff.

  • Sit together on the lawn to enjoy concert with provided snacks and drinks or bring your own
  • Receive an interactive booklet to help understand and engage with the concert
  • Invitation to post-concert Artist Meet & Greet
  • Meet new friends
  • Receive a Presto Club t-shirt

How to Participate

1) Purchase lawn tickets, or utilize your lawn pass, for the following concerts:

Summer Practice Tips

  • Attend and listen to all types of music performances.
  • Pick a practice time that is next to an already set habit like a meal or brushing your teeth.
  • If possible, take your instrument on vacation or outside to experience playing in different environments. Take a picture and send it to Education@BravoVail.org. We will post it on our social media to show “Where in the World” our students are practicing!
  • Review all your pieces from this past year and schedule an end of summer recital for a family event.
  • Record yourself once a week and take notes on what you think you could do better.
  • Create a soundtrack for your favorite story by making up sounds and tunes that go with that story.

Follow this routine:

  1. Scales
  2. Exercises
  3. Singing
  4. Tapping out rhythms
  5. Drill a hard spot
  6. Play through a piece

Congratulations to 2024 Concerto Competition Winner

Paige Middleton

After a competitive audition process held in February, Paige Middleton, violin, was named the winner of our First Annual Teen Chamber Ensemble Concerto Competition. As the winner, Paige had the honor of performing Vivaldi Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor with the Teen Chamber Ensemble at the May 2 Spring Recital.

Paige was selected after two rounds of auditions by an outside panel of judges brought in to adjudicate. The first round of audition was completely blind, meaning the judges could not see the students. Students were asked to prepare a short movement from a work that could be performed with the Teen Chamber Ensemble. An online application screened applicants for qualifications. The in-person audition scored the four applicants on their technical and musical abilities. Two finalists were chosen for the second round which was in front of the judges without a screen. In addition to being scored for technical and musical abilities again, the students were given a score for stage presence.

Thank you to all the applicants who put forth the effort to prepare for this challenge. The amount of progress a student makes during this type of preparation is measured in confidence, stamina, and persistence that can be applied to many other life events.

Congratulations to Willem Rohwer

2024 Battle Mountain High School Graduate

Willem Rohwer joined Music Makers Haciendo Música in February 2022 as the bass player for the Teen Chamber Ensemble, the Piano Strings Ensemble, Summer Intensive, Young Musicians Day, a member of the Bravo! Vail Teen Council, and a two-year summer box office employee.

He started playing the bass in Michigan when he was five years old. Throughout his journey, he developed a love of all kinds of music as well as playing with others. Since moving to the area, he has participated in the Battle Mountain High School Orchestra, Colorado All-State Orchestra for 2023 and 2024, the 2023 Philadelphia International Music Festival, and the 2023 International Society of Bassists Conference.

He will be attending the University of Colorado-Boulder as a music performance major after winning the Sher Distinguished Musician Scholarship. He plans to add a second major in astrophysics during his sophomore year. His biggest advice to younger musicians: “Sing everything you want to play in tune and in time.”

Ayden Caffery
$1,000 to purchase a violin or take private piano lessons

Ayden Caffery is a 13-year-old Homestake Peak School student. Ayden has participated in group piano and violin lessons as well as the Music Makers Haciendo Música Teen Chamber Ensemble, Piano Chamber Ensembles, Summer Intensive. She has also volunteered at various outreach events including performances at Vail Health, Eagle Art Days, and others. She is currently a newly appointed member of the Bravo! Vail Teen Council.

Jackson Brooks
$2,500 for private piano lessons

Jackson Brooks is a 14-year-old attending Eagle Valley Middle School and will soon attend Eagle Valley High School. He most recently participated in the Music Makers Haciendo Música program as a pianist in group lessons as well as the Piano Chamber Ensemble and the Piano Strings Ensemble. This summer he will be the first pianist to participate in Young Musicians Day as the orchestra pianist.

Amelia (Mia) Matteo
$500 for the purchase of a guitar

Amelia Matteo is a 13-year-old attending Stone Creek Charter in Gypsum. She has participated in Piano Group Classes since 2018 and has been known to “love” music. She has always been interested in learning guitar and thinks it is a beautiful instrument.

Instituted in 2016, the Bravo! Vail Music Award supports and extends opportunities for students to pursue musical studies of the highest caliber. Recipients will have displayed commitment, dedication, and excellence in their musical studies. The goal of the award is to provide financial assistance to a student in their pursuit of serious high-level music studies in an accredited program, camp, academic institution, or another similar setting, or to assist with the costs of purchases of instruments, software, or other materials essential to the student’s continued musical studies.

Bravo! Vail Presto Club

¡Mejora la experiencia de concierto de tu hijo! Bravo! Vail Presto Club es una oportunidad para estudiantes de 8 a 14 años de edad para reunirse en conciertos selectos de la Orchestral Series, socializar, interactuar con un folleto interactivo diseñado durante los conciertos y participar en encuentros con artistas curados después del concierto. Los estudiantes estarán supervisados con personal de Education & Engagement.

Consejos de práctica de verano

  • Asiste y escucha todo tipo de actuaciones musicales.

Felicitaciones a la ganadora del 2024 Concurso de Conciertos

Paige Middleton

Después de un proceso de audición competitivo celebrado en febrero, Paige Middleton, violín, fue nombrada ganadora de nuestro primer Concurso Anual de Conciertos para Conjuntos de Cámara para Adolescentes. Como ganadora, Paige tuvo el honor de interpretar el Concierto para violín n.º 1 en sol menor de Vivaldi con el Teen Chamber Ensemble en el Recital de Primavera del 2 de mayo.

Paige fue seleccionada después de dos rondas de audiciones por un panel externo de jueces traídos para juzgar. La primera ronda de audición fue completamente a ciegas, lo que significa que los jueces no pudieron ver a los estudiantes. Se pidió a los estudiantes que prepararan un movimiento corto a partir de una obra que pudiera ser interpretada con el Teen Chamber Ensemble. Una solicitud en línea evaluó a los solicitantes para determinar sus calificaciones. La audición presencial calificó a los cuatro solicitantes en sus habilidades técnicas y musicales. Se eligieron dos finalistas para la segunda ronda, que se llevó a cabo frente a los jueces sin pantalla. Además de volver a ser puntuados por sus habilidades técnicas y musicales, los estudiantes recibieron una puntuación por su presencia escénica.

Gracias a todos los solicitantes que se esforzaron por prepararse para este desafío. La cantidad de progreso que un estudiante logra durante este tipo de preparación se mide en confianza, resistencia y persistencia que se pueden aplicar a muchos otros eventos de la vida.

Willem Rohwer se unió a Music Makers Haciendo Música en febrero de 2022 como bajista del Teen Chamber Ensemble, el Piano Strings Ensemble, Summer Intensive, Young Musicians Day, miembro del Bravo! Vail Teen Council, y un empleado de boletos de verano de dos años.

Comenzó a tocar el bajo en Michigan cuando tenía cinco años. A lo largo de su viaje, desarrolló un amor por todo tipo de música, así como por tocar con otros. Desde que se mudó al valle, ha participado en la Orquesta de la Escuela Secundaria Battle Mountain, la Orquesta Estatal de Colorado para 2023 y 2024, el Festival Internacional de Música de Filadelfia de 2023 y la Conferencia de la Sociedad Internacional de Bajistas de 2023.

Amelia (Mia) Matteo
