Running time: 70 minutes; no intermission.
Please note that this show contains strobe lighting and brief depictions of violence.
Since 1999, whether through DJ residencies or working with young creatives in schools and communities across the island of Ireland, I’ve believed in the idea captured by Albert Ayler: Music is the healing force of the universe. I’ve seen how spaces once defined by division can become places of unity. In the concert venue or on the dance floor, differences are celebrated or fall away—we connect through the shared experience, through each other. In a place like my home city of Belfast, religious and political lines disappear. We become one community.
North Star carries that same spirit—a celebration of belonging.
It feels surreal to be writing to you about a project that has been a lifetime in the making—a deeply personal and professional milestone. To introduce a show that links Belfast in 1845 to New York in 2026, through a little-known moment inspired by Frederick Douglass—the solidarity the city extended to him during the abolitionist movement—is something I don’t take lightly. North Star carries a cultural relevance that connects our shared past to present challenges, shaping the voices of tomorrow.
I often wonder about the social environment Douglass stepped into in Belfast. The city made a Black man, effectively on the run, feel safe and welcomed, so much so that he wrote, "wherever else I feel myself to be a stranger, I will remember I have a home in Belfast." To center that moment, and explore its impact then and now with students in Belfast and New York, has been a privilege. In recent years, social and political tensions have only reinforced how vital this story is, and what it stands for: kindness, compassion, equity, and hope.
Twenty-five years from my DJing debut in Derry, my journey to you in New York began. In July 2024, ahead of North Star's premiere in Belfast, I hosted a Q&A with young New Yorkers at the Dead Rabbit, where we asked: How many of Douglass’s challenges still resonate today? If North Star came to New York, who would its voices be? And what does it mean for Northern Ireland, as a post-conflict society, to hold these conversations?
Now, we are beginning to answer those questions—passing the baton to your city. I've visited with young people from Jackson Heights to Hell's Kitchen, some of whom will join our wonderful cast of pop, hip-hop, jazz, and gospel musicians in the New York premiere at Irish Arts Center, which begins June 3 for a three-week run.
I believe North Star can become a light—amplifying unheard voices, illuminating unseen communities, and championing self-expression. And in doing so, this self-perpetuating model will continually exchange stories, perspectives, shared human experience, a north star, all inspired by this unique cultural experience.
I thank you for having us.
Best wishes,
Kwame Daniels

In 2024, the Belfast Telegraph and the Irish Times recognized her as "One to Watch." She debuted her live performance career at the end of 2020 and continued rising in 2022 when BBC Introducing ATL first labelled her "One to Watch" after a series of captivating performances. The following year (2023), she earned RTÉ 2FM's Rising Artist status and received one of only three Rising Star gold disks from Ditto.
Winnie's journey continued in 2023 with a TEDx Stormont talk, showcasing her talents on international stages in the UK, Ireland, and the USA. Her performances caught the attention of icons like Macy Gray and Sister Sledge, who invited her to open their shows in Cork and Belfast. Notable stage appearances include headlining the BBC Introducing stage at Latitude in 2022 and Glastonbury in 2023.
Her music blends soulful vocals seamlessly with pop and dance rhythms. Winnie Ama has garnered support from local and national radio, BBC 6, RTÉ 2FM, and BBC Radio 1, where BBC Introducing's Gemma Bradley praised her unique voice and fresh writing style.

Her debut album Formula OneDa, released via Heavenly Recordings, showcased her versatility across hip-hop, drum ’n’ bass, reggae, and electronic music, with standout tracks including "Major Pay", "Set It Off", "Superwoman", and "The Western Way".
Stepping fully into creative ownership, OneDa’s self-produced single "SUPERSTAR" marked a pivotal shift, solidifying her dual identity as both rapper and producer. Her follow-up single, "Touch Back", a self-produced collaboration with Manchester dancehall artist Teasegad, hit No. 1 on the iTunes reggae chart, further expanding her reach and genre-blending credibility.
In early 2026, OneDa collaborated on a brand-new single signed to Armada Music, created with Mason, producer of "Perfect (Exceeder)." The track was released on February 6. OneDa is currently working on her next EP, continuing to push her sound forward with clarity, autonomy, and ambition.
