Mavis Staples

Sat, 10/16 | 8pm
Member Cocktail Hour | 7pm

“We have been fortunate to present gospel and R&B icon Mavis Staples several times in recent years, most recently with Nick Lowe in 2016. Since then, she has released two critically acclaimed albums and was recognized as a Kennedy Center Honoree.

This year, archival footage of a show-stopping Mavis performance turned up in SUMMER OF SOUL, Questlove’s documentary that unearthed performances from the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. She appears alongside her idol Mahalia Jackson, and at the ailing gospel pioneer’s urging, steps up and takes the lead on Martin Luther King’s favorite song 'Take My Hand, Precious Lord.' It’s an extraordinarily powerful moment in a film that is packed with mind-blowing performances.

Needless to say, I can’t wait to welcome Mavis and her killer band back to the Paramount next weekend. See you there!”
