Our Virtual Open House series continues! Mammal researcher Dominique Fauteux, Ph.D., explains why mandibles and teeth are really helpful in differentiating between species of little mammals, such as rodents or hares.

How did the fish get its name?

Step into the museum's wet lab and meet Katriina Ilves, Ph.D., who talks about identifying and naming fish species using museum collections. See intriguing specimens up close, including a parasitic lamprey.

Ignite and Annual Public Meeting
February 3, 2021, 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm EST

Time is ticking! The deadline is Feb. 2 at 5 pm EST to register for this popular annual event. Eight speakers will each have five minutes to talk about their research. President and CEO Meg Beckel will also give a short presentation to serve as the Museum's Annual Public Meeting. Don't miss out! Register now!

Dinosaurs on the Wing
February 3, 2021, 7 pm EST

The first feathered dinosaur fossil was found in 1996, a discovery that revolutionized palaeontology. Jordan Mallon, Ph.D., will give a talk on the recent history of feathered dinosaur finds and the surprises that came with them. This free event is presented by THEMUSEUM in Kitchener, Ontario, and will be streamed live to YouTube.

Behind the scenes
Nature Art

The Canadian Museum of Nature's library and archives include a Nature Art collection of around 2,400 paintings, sculptures, tapestries, photographs, and even duck decoys! With the arrival of February and the annual observance of Groundhog Day, it is fitting to share an illustration – and a Nature Scoop video (see link below) – of these famous rodents. The drawing above was done by artist Dwayne Harty for a publication in our library called The Squirrels of Canada by Shirley E. Woods.
