SFJAZZ RESIDENT ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
VIJAY IYER  |  JAN 18 - 21

Vijay Iyert Duos

Vijay Iyer duos w/ Craig Taborn & Kris Davis

THU, JAN 18

Iyer begins his residency by performing an evening of duets with two of the jazz world’s most explorative pianists. Craig Taborn has established himself as a modern master through five expansive releases and pivotal sideman roles with Chris Potter, Roscoe Mitchell, and others. Davis was dubbed one of the music’s top up-and-comers in a 2012 The New York Times article titled “New Pilots at the Keyboard.”

THUMS UP

Vijay Iyer Thums Up

SUN, JAN 21

Thums Up is an exploratory and groove-heavy mix of acoustic instruments and electronics that features Iyer alongside Punjabi-American rapper Himanshu Suri (formerly of Das Racist), guitarist Rafiq Bhatia, drummer Kassa Overall (Geri Allen, Henry Threadgill), and Pakistani vocalist and composer Arooj Aftab. JazzTimes called them “a powerful expression of the hyphenated-American identity.” This will be the group's West Coast debut!

OPEN DANCE FLOOR SHOW

FRI & SAT 7PM SOLD OUT

Following this year’s SFJAZZ Gala 2018, the iconic Preservation Hall Jazz Band performs four shows celebrating the release of their latest album So It Is. Since the early 1960s, the band has toured the world, sharing the raucous, soulful sound of traditional New Orleans jazz. The group’s new album redefines what New Orleans music means today by tapping into the city’s Afro-Cuban roots, through its common ancestry with Afrobeat, and the spiritual sound of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane.
