We are thrilled to announce that Montalvo has been approved for an Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in support of our upcoming project, A Path Forward.
In partnership with the Santa Clara County Parks Department and West Valley College Department of Land Management, and in collaboration with the Confederation of Ohlone People, we will be creating a dynamic new living land acknowledgement on our 175-acre grounds. A Path Forward will be a permanent work that leads visitors through the park, providing augmented reality (AR) experiences that engage them with artistic, cultural, and scientific content specific to our grounds and forest.
This living monument, a prototype for the county parks, will elevate local Ohlone voices, honor indigenous knowledge, and enlighten visitors about forest stewardship, land management, and environmental conservation in the natural ecosystems of Santa Clara County.
Anchored by a hummingbird, a key figure in the Ohlone creation story which will serve as the avatar and design inspiration for the project’s wayfinding, the work will unfold as an embedded journey throughout the grounds and trails, incorporating a series of AR experiences. For example, a circle of Redwoods may provide not only an AR experience of Ohlone gathered and singing, but it may then take viewers below the earth’s surface to understand the networked root systems of the trees communicating in real time. Stories, songs and dances will be shared for park visitors to experience the vibrant traditions that continue today.
We are extremely excited about this work and the partnerships that will make it happen, and we are honored to have been given the support of the NEA. To learn more about the Our Town program, visit the link below.
