LA Opera We're Back!

Thank you all so much! We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response to our new E-Newsletter. A special thanks goes out to everyone who submitted entries in our “Name That Blog” contest. We’ve received hundreds of amazing, creative entries. Now the work of choosing a winner begins. We’ll announce the name of the winner next week.

The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is buzzing with activity, sets are being built, singers are in rehearsals and music is filling the halls of the opera house. That can only mean one thing: the new season is upon us! Will you be at opening night? We’ve got a spectacular evening planned for you! The White Night Season Opening Gala, Company Premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, a Russian-themed After Party and, of course, champagne, dinner and dancing.

Così fan tutte LA Opera Presents Così fan tutte

Così fan tutte is the last of the three stellar collaborations between Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte (the other are The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni). In Così, two young men go undercover to test the fidelity of their fiancés by disguising themselves as foreign suitors. Not only do the women fail the test, but each decides to marry the other man, not their original love. Ultimately the test is revealed, all is forgiven, and everyone lives happily ever after... or do they?

The success of any performance of Cosi rests on the shoulders of six singers of extraordinary – and equal – vocal finesse and dramatic flair. We’ve assembled an absolutely stellar cast that have charm to burn. Soprano Aleksandra Kurzak makes her LA Opera debut as Fiordiligi, one of the unassuming sisters being tested, while bass-baritone Ildebrando D'Arcangelo makes his first Company appearance as Guglielmo – one of the suitors doing the testing. Both of these very talented singers are also releasing new CDs in advance of their LA Opera performances on September 13. Aleksandra Kurzak’s, Gioia!, includes arias by Rossini, Mozart, Donizetti, Strauss II, Puccini, Verdi, Bellini and Moniuszko. And Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, known as the pre-eminent Mozart man in his vocal range, delivers arias both famous and rare in his all-Italian CD, Mozart (Deutsch Grammophon). Both albums will be available for purchase in our Opera Shop, and (we hear) there may even be a CD signing after an upcoming performance!

Emmy Rossum Spotlight On Emmy Rossum, Honorary Chair for the ARIA Opening Night Celebration

One might think that actress and singer Emmy Rossum's connection with opera started with her starring role in the film version of the musical, Phantom of the Opera, but it began long before then. In fact, she began her theatrical career with the Metropolitan Opera’s children’s chorus when she was just seven years old, eventually performing in more than 20 different operas and 5 different languages! In 2007, Emmy recorded her first album for Geffen records, Inside Out, which showcased her classically-trained voice as well as her stellar songwriting ability.

Now, Emmy is taking a break from her duties on Showtime's Shameless to host ARIA’s White Night Season Opening Celebration on Saturday, September 17. We’re excited to have her join the festivities. Join Emmy at the Opening Night ARIA party! Click here for more details.
