Finding Harmony: A Journey with the CSO Latino Alliance
By Ramiro J. Atristaín-Carrión, Founding Co-Chair, Emeritus, CSO Latino Alliance
That single experience planted a seed. Years later, when Angélica discovered the CSO Latino Alliance, she joined right away — determined to open the same door for others, especially Latino families who might not otherwise see themselves reflected in classical music.
She describes her love for classical music beautifully: “It puts memories too complex for words into sound — it expresses our deepest pain and reveals it to all who are willing to listen.” Her favorite piece, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, reflects that duality of life: sorrow and joy, each giving meaning to the other.
One of the most rewarding parts of her journey has been watching the Latino Alliance flourish. “When I joined over eight years ago, we were just a small group. Now we’ve become a thriving, welcoming community where everyone belongs. Music belongs to all of us.”
Angélica’s passions extend far beyond the stage. She collects antiquarian books — her treasure is a 1735 Latin translation of The Iliad — and she loves capturing the quiet beauty of the world through photography. Last year she recommended I read La sombra del viento by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, a book I devoured thanks to her. She also performed for over 15 years with Chicago’s first Guatemalan marimba group, raising funds for schools and medical supplies.
Her story is a reminder that whether through music, books or images, joy lies in celebrating the imperfect beauty that connects us all.
