Latino Alliance member spotlight: Angélica Cano

Finding Harmony: A Journey with the CSO Latino Alliance

By Ramiro J. Atristaín-Carrión, Founding Co-Chair, Emeritus, CSO Latino Alliance

Angélica Cano

Growing up in Chicago’s Belmont-Cragin neighborhood, access to classical music was almost nonexistent. For Angélica Cano, that all changed with one ticket. A donated program opened the doors to Orchestra Hall, and suddenly she found herself in front of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. “I walked in and saw so many musicians with instruments I didn’t even know existed, coming together to create one masterpiece,” she told me. “It showed me how beauty can come from difference, how harmony comes from many parts working together.”

That single experience planted a seed. Years later, when Angélica discovered the CSO Latino Alliance, she joined right away — determined to open the same door for others, especially Latino families who might not otherwise see themselves reflected in classical music.

She describes her love for classical music beautifully: “It puts memories too complex for words into sound — it expresses our deepest pain and reveals it to all who are willing to listen.” Her favorite piece, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, reflects that duality of life: sorrow and joy, each giving meaning to the other.

One of the most rewarding parts of her journey has been watching the Latino Alliance flourish. “When I joined over eight years ago, we were just a small group. Now we’ve become a thriving, welcoming community where everyone belongs. Music belongs to all of us.”

Angélica’s passions extend far beyond the stage. She collects antiquarian books — her treasure is a 1735 Latin translation of The Iliad — and she loves capturing the quiet beauty of the world through photography. Last year she recommended I read La sombra del viento by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, a book I devoured thanks to her. She also performed for over 15 years with Chicago’s first Guatemalan marimba group, raising funds for schools and medical supplies.

Her story is a reminder that whether through music, books or images, joy lies in celebrating the imperfect beauty that connects us all.

Pablo Sáinz-Villegas wants to bring the classical guitar ‘back to the people’

The 2025/26 Civic Season

Once again, the 2025/26 season of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago puts an emphasis on diversity, with a variety of works by women and people of color. Ken-David Masur, Civic’s principal conductor, describes this season’s programming as “normalizing the call to give voice to musicians and composers who perhaps had been neglected.”
