HoMA OFFERS MILITARY FAMILIES FREE ADMISSION MAY 27 TO SEPT. 6

Part of annual nationwide Blue Star Museums program

HONOLULU—The Honolulu Museum of Art continues its mission of being a place of discovery and inspiration accessible to all with its participation in the Blue Star Museums initiative, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and more than 2,000 participating museums across the country.

HoMA has participated in the Blue Star Museums program since it began in 2010, and this year again welcomes Hawai‘i’s military families with free admission from May 27 to Sept. 6.

Blue Star Families is a national nonprofit network of military families from all ranks and services, including guard and reserve, dedicated to supporting, connecting and empowering military families.

“The Honolulu Museum of Art is honored to connect the military with the museum through the Blue Star Museum program,” said HoMA interim director Penni Hall. “HoMA is a place of inspiration and discovery for the community, where people can recharge, reflect and learn about global perspectives. We gratefully welcome Hawai‘i’s service men and women and their families who do so much for our country.”

This summer at HoMA, military visitors can explore the work of Hawai‘i-born artist Toshiko Takaezu in the exhibition Toshiko Takaezu: Worlds Within and the Himalayan-influenced paintings and sculptures in Divine Disruption: The Art of Tsherin Sherpa.

The free admission program is available for those currently serving in the United States Military—Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard—including Reservists, National Guardsmen, US Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps and up to five family members. Qualified members must show a Geneva Convention common access card, DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID) or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card for entrance to a Blue Star Museum. The military ID holder can bring up to five family members; a family member is defined as a spouse, child, aunt, uncle and grandparents. In addition, youth age 18 and under are always free at HoMA.

Other participating museums in Hawai‘i are Capitol Modern, Lyman Museum and Obama Hawaiian Africana Museum.
