Message From Interim Executive Director Kathryn Martin

Dear Symphony Friend,

We have so much news to share with you – please read all the way to the bottom!

  • Join Maestro Nir Kabaretti (just back from performances in Rome, Italy and Fort Myers, FL) and the Orchestra for two concerts this weekend!
  • Make you plans to join us Thanksgiving Weekend for our Family Concert of Peter and the Wolf!
  • Put your party hats on for a festive New Year’s Eve Pops Concert with Guest Conductor Bob Bernhardt and the amazing acrobatic aerialists of Cirque de la Symphonie!

As Interim Executive Director, it's been inspiring to hear from students, parents, teachers, members of the Orchestra, volunteers, and ticket-holders how much the Santa Barbara Symphony means to them, and the impact and importance it has in their lives. The board and staff work tirelessly and passionately to ensure this. It is not easy. As a non-profit performing arts organization, ticket sales only cover a small portion of the costs to deliver our programs to the community. Every year, our generous family of supporters partner with us to make it all possible. And momentum is building.

  • This year we will provide indispensable music education and community engagement programs to over 8,000 students.
  • After a national search that led us back to the leadership talent here in our own community, we welcome Kevin Marvin as Executive Director on December 1st!
  • We say farewell to our long-time Director of Development, Pamela Perkins-Dwyer, whose dedication and love of the Orchestra connected the Symphony to so many of you!
  • Through collaboration and community partnerships, we are providing free bi-weekly music instruction to 230 students in the Santa Barbara Unified School District.

Have a wonderful month of November and please share your enthusiasm for what the Symphony is doing!

Best,

Santa Barbara Symphony Appoints Kevin A. Marvin Executive Director

Santa Barbara, CA — Kevin A. Marvin, whose bold administrative reforms have reinvigorated the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, has been named executive director of the Santa Barbara Symphony. He will succeed David Pratt, who was recently named chief executive of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Brisbane, Australia. Effective December 1, Mr. Marvin’s appointment caps a national search process that included input from Board members, staff, and Music Director Nir Kabaretti. The Symphony’s Board unanimously approved the appointment on October 26.

“The Symphony is very excited about the result of our robust executive search process. I am convinced that Kevin is the right individual to build on our recent momentum and position the Symphony for even greater success,” said Santa Barbara Symphony Board President Arthur Swalley. “It is remarkable that a city this size would boast so much leadership talent. We are honored to share this connection with the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra and deeply respect the organization’s family of supporters and its reputation for excellence.”
