From Youthful Exuberance to Dark Romanticism:
Three Piano Trios

Tuesday, October 13, 2026 | 8pm | Renée & Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall

Opening Night features three contrasting piano trios by Shostakovich, Debussy, and Dvořák. The first two were written by Shostakovich and Debussy as teenagers, revealing a youthful exuberance and early glimpse of their distinctive voices. In contrast, by the time Dvořák composed his Piano Trio in F minor, he was at the height of his career and favoring a dramatic, darkly Romantic style. Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, violinist Lisa Batiashvili, and cellist Gautier Capuçon join forces for this electrifying chamber music program.

Behind the Music

SHOSTAKOVICH: Piano Trio No. 1 in C minor, Op. 8

The Piano Trio No. 1, one of Shostakovich's earliest substantial chamber works, was composed when he was just a teenager at the Petrograd Conservatory in 1923. The recurring half-tone motif in the piece (traditionally a symbol of love and longing in music) led some interpreters to believe the piece was a message for Tatyana Glivenko, a woman whom he fell deeply in love with and dedicated the piece to. Its Romanticism is atypical of the composer's mature work. Though it reflects the Russian Romantic tradition in which Shostakovich was schooled at the Conservatory, the score already revealed his strikingly individual voice. Thus Piano Trio No. 1 offers a glimpse of the composer on the threshold of the artistic maturity that would emerge fully in his First Symphony, which he composed two years later.

DEBUSSY: Piano Trio in G major

Debussy composed the Piano Trio in 1880 when he was only 18 years old. The trio is a four-movement work characterized by lyricism, clarity and gentle sensibility. It features an expansive opening movement, a lighter dance-inflected second movement, a lyrical slow movement, and an energetic finale. For the rest of his life, Debussy would move far beyond this Romantic aesthetic to Impressionism and Modernism. Fifteen years prior to completing his celebrated string quartet, Debussy’s lone piano trio gives an early glimpse into the evolution of a musical giant long before his signature style matured.

DVOŘÁK: Piano Trio No. 3 in F minor, Op. 65

The Piano Trio in F minor is one of Dvořák’s major achievements in chamber music. He completed the piece in 1883, in the same period he composed The Scherzo capriccioso, Hussite Overture, Ballade in D minor, and Seventh Symphony. By this time, he had already carved out a distinctive path across a broad spectrum of genres. Still, at the age of 41, Dvořák achieved a new level of maturity as a composer. Instead of the warmth and spontaneous joy of life typical for his music, the Piano Trio No. 3 conveys dark and somber thoughts, a sense of uncertainty, uneasiness and defiance. This move away from his folk-oriented Slavic style showed Dvorák “at the pinnacle of his career,” ranking him “among the world’s greatest modern masters.”
