A Behind-the-Scenes Peek at YOUR Theatre

I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.

--  Thomas Jefferson (well, not really). Despite how much we love this quote, the hard working computers at Spurious Quotations have checked Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Digital Edition, Thomas Jefferson: Biographies collection, American Periodicals Series, JSTOR, Google Books, The Quote Verifier, and The Yale Book of Quotations, and they report “neither this quotation nor any variations thereof have been found in Thomas Jefferson’s writings.” The earliest appearance of the quote in print was 1947; the earliest attribution to TJ was 1982. Other attributions include Mark Twain, Gov George Allen, Samuel Goldwyn, and “an old Amish saying.”

Despite Pandemic, Amber Martinez Fulfills Hugs Contract

Felicia Curry in Queens Girl in the World

In January, it seemed all but impossible. Virginia Rep had committed to the VA Dept. of Social Services to book 150 performances of Hugs and Kisses in elementary schools. We approached schools statewide, offering the option of a live touring performance in a large school assembly program or an intimate virtual showing viewed on a classroom TV. We heard back that, due to COVID, most schools still weren’t allowing “outsiders” into their buildings, and they weren’t scheduling large assemblies. And many teachers called back to say they were nervous about sharing the virtual program in their classrooms without our live, trained actors standing next to them for support. Despite these challenges, our Arts in Education Manager Amber Martinez didn’t give up. Now, she’s booked 55 live shows in school cafetoriums and 152 virtual performances in classrooms, completely fulfilling our commitment to VDSS! Congratulations, Amber, for your exemplary service to Virginia’s children.

Beehive Dos Reflect Can-Do Spirit

Sue Griffin at Colonial Wigs

Sue Griffin, Director of Costumes, was thrilled to get the call last February. Colonial Wigs was selling their building and needed to clear out their stock of hairpieces, hats, and accessories.  Would we be able to send over a crew within the next 24 hours to help clear out the building?  In return, they’d donate to us any items we’d like to keep for future use in shows. With a production of Beehive in the wings, how could she say “no”? Sue and her hardworking staff rolled up their sleeves and went to work, not only clearing the building in record time, but adding a large number of wigs, hats and accessories to Virginia Rep’s (and TheatreVCU’s) stock.  When you enjoy the 36 Beehive wigs that recreate different eras of the 60s, direct a tip of the hat to Sue and our “willing to do whatever it takes” production team!

Virginia Rep Joins as Sponsor of Hanover County Volunteer Event

Hanover County Seal

On May 12, Virginia Rep will join Hanover County for the first time as a sponsor of their Spirit of Volunteerism Celebration, from 7 until 9pm in the Hanover High School Auditorium. Virginia Rep was founded in Hanover County in 1953 as Barksdale Theatre at Hanover Tavern, becoming Central Virginia’s first professional performing arts organization of the modern era. When we launch our 2022-23 Season in September, it will be our 70th Anniversary Season! As a sponsor of the Hanover event, we will be awarding vouchers for two free Tavern tickets to each of the eight Hanoverians receiving volunteerism awards on that evening. Our Co-Artistic Director – Community, Desirée Roots, will be among the entertainers during the evening’s celebration. And our designers are working on a festive centerpiece that will celebrate Barksdale Theatre at Hanover Tavern, adorn one of the tables, and be auctioned off at evening’s end!

Two-Way Talkback

In last week’s GNF, we mentioned that, “Kikau Alvaro, our former Associate Artistic Director, received a huge promotion and moved to Philadelphia to begin working as Program Director of Musical Theatre and Associate Professor at University of the Arts.” Thanks to Jackie Jones for emailing back with this newer news: “It gets better! Kikau became the Interim Dean at the Ira Brind School of Theater Arts!” Also, Jackie shared this additional suggestion: “Please run on down to VA Beach to catch 3 Virginia Rep veterans, Rachel Rose Gilmore, Derrick Jaques, and Jacqueline Jones (yes, that's me!), in Virginia Musical Theatre's The Full Monty!,” running this weekend at the Sandler Center for Performing Arts, 757-340-5446.
