Latino Alliance member spotlight: Xavier Beteta

How Chopin, Muti and tango inspire a lifelong love of music and belonging

By Ramiro J. Atristaín-Carrión, Founding Co-Chair, Emeritus, CSO Latino Alliance

Xavier Beteta

When I asked Xavier what first drew him to the CSO Latino Alliance, he didn’t hesitate: “The feeling of being welcome — and the chance to meet other Latin Americans living in Chicago.” That sense of community was matched by the thrill of his first performance in 2019: Riccardo Muti conducting Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3.

For Xavier, classical music isn’t just something you hear — it’s something you feel. “Classical music, for me, is the deepest way to express emotions,” he says. His top pick? Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1, performed last year by Yulianna Avdeeva. He calls it breathtaking: “The second movement is out of this world … the whole piece is a tour de force that demands perfect technique and endurance.” And here’s the kicker — Xavier doesn’t just admire the music, he creates it. An accomplished composer himself, he also happens to have one of the coolest day jobs around: Assistant Professor of Music Composition at Wheaton College.

His most memorable moment with the Latino Alliance happened at Open House Chicago at Symphony Center. “So many Latino families came by with their children to learn about our concerts — it was wonderful to see our community so curious and engaged. I think Latino audiences are growing, and classical music is becoming more accessible every day.”

If he could share dinner with one conductor, his answer is clear: Riccardo Muti. “He seems approachable and fun, and his interpretations — like his Schubert Symphonies — unveil landscapes I’d never heard before.”

And when he’s not at Symphony Center? You’ll find him between the pages of poetry or on the dance floor, moving to the rhythm of tango.

A couple of years ago, I grabbed a beer with Xavier and quickly realized how fortunate we are in the CSO Latino Alliance to count him among our community — not only a passionate and thoughtful voice, but also a gifted composer. He reminds us that music is at its most powerful when it fulfills its true purpose: bringing people together.
