HoMA AND THE DOE ORCHESTRATE HAWAI‘I’S INAUGURAL FINE ARTS CONFERENCE

HONOLULU, HAWAI‘I—The Honolulu Museum of Art (HoMA) has partnered with the Hawai‘i Department of Education (DOE) to orchestrate the first ever Fine Arts Conference for Hawai‘i’s public school educators. For nearly a decade, HoMA has provided comprehensive educator programs and transformative experiences for DOE teachers and now with the inaugural Fine Arts Conference, the museum will offer professional development for elementary, fine arts and performing arts teachers on Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i Island, and O‘ahu.

The purpose of the Fine Arts Conference is to help prepare DOE educators statewide for the rollout of the National Core Arts Standards (NCAS) for the 2025-2026 school year and to have tools available to integrate NCAS into their curriculum.

As one of the hosts and facilitators, HoMA will provide workshops and break-out sessions on how to use object-based learning for close observation and critical thinking, and educators will have access to HoMA’s educator resources, permanent art collection, and lending collection.

“This signifies our commitment to art in schools and the strong partnership we’ve developed with the DOE,” said Aaron Padilla, HoMA’s director of learning and engagement. “By working directly with teachers, they not only become more adept in utilizing art in their classrooms, they also become strong advocates of the museum. The impact is exponential and the work we do together greatly outweighs what we could ever do alone.”

HoMA and the DOE completed workshops on Kaua‘i, Maui, and Hawai‘i Island in June and will hold upcoming workshops on O‘ahu next week.
