HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Our school support team is preparing for 2022 to be exciting with a (super secret) dino-mite feature exhibition scheduled to arrive at the dome in late February. I dino if it's too far of a t-rex to bring your students to Science World on a field trip, but we'll share more info soon.

Most importantly: we can come to you! We have received wonderful feedback from teachers and students on our direct-to-classes online programs that include fascinating demonstrations of forces, colourful chemistry, amazing animal adaptations and creative coding. Find out more below.

Finally, a personal note: after over 15 years at Science World and 10 years of writing these newsletters to share resources, I am moving on to a new job outside of the organization at the end of January. If you've always wanted to work in a high-energy environment supporting teachers and students across the province to access high-quality STEAM education opportunities keep your eyes on the Science World job postings over the next few weeks! I'm going to miss working under the dome, connecting with teachers and watching students' eyes light up with wonder.

Yours scientifically,

Kate Henderson

Book a Tech-Up Online Coding Workshop

In these workshops, tailored to grade level curriculum connections for ADST, a Tech-Up facilitator from Science World in Vancouver or The Exploration Place in Prince George leads a session for your students to understand the fundamentals of coding and computational thinking through multiple activities that support cross-curricular learning.

"I was nervous beforehand as I have no experience as a teacher with online workshops for kids, but things went smoothly. I appreciated being sent a list beforehand, along with a brief video for reference. We are going to take what we learned today and keep practicing, so eventually we can work on our own Scratch projects together.

- Teacher, SD 63

Grades:

2–4:  Bee Bot Bop

4–7:  Say It With Scratch

7–9:  Marvellous Micro:bits

Online Tech-Up workshops connect to your class computer/projector using Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, require a stable internet connection and at least 1 device per 2 students. Check workshop link for specific tech needs. These can be delivered to students in-class/remote/hybrid. Pre-workshop tech check can be arranged; no previous experience necessary!

Bursaries are available to receive a free workshop, please indicate your interest on your request form.

Online Science Adventures

Classes across across BC can request a high-energy Science World online program. Each dynamic and engaging session provides experiential learning through live demonstrations and experiments, with activities and resources that can continue in-class learnings.

Grades:

K–7:  Fantastic Forces

K–7:  Science For A Changing World

4–7:  Chemistry

Online Science Adventures connect to your class computer/projector using Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, and require a stable internet connection and scientists-in-training* who are in-class, remote or hybrid.

*this isn't actually a requirement, your students can simply be curious and interested in learning more about the world around them. We'll do the rest.

Request a volunteer mentor to visit your class

SIS inspires K-12 students across BC with fascinating presentations by volunteer career professionals from various Science and Technology fields. Students have a unique opportunity during the session to ask questions about the mentor's career path, skills and job responsibilities.

Download a poster to share this opportunity for a FREE online program with your teacher colleagues. We suggest printing it and sticking it up in an obvious place but you'll know what works best for your peers!

Appreciating Power with Carla van der Pauw

We've partnered with BC Hydro to celebrate environmental stewards like Thomas Haney Secondary teacher Carla van der Pauw! As a child during El Salvador's civil war, Carla weathered frequent and unpredictable rolling blackouts. Today, she's helping a generation of students become sustainability leaders.
