Dear YSM students, faculty, and staff,

I am delighted to share the welcome news that the School of Music has received a large supply of rapid antigen tests from the University. Use of these rapid tests, in combination with observance of our existing precautions, will allow us to expand our range of unmasked music-making activity. We are finalizing the plan for the next phase of unmasking and will be sharing the details with the School in the next few days. Please note that unmasking will continue to be optional and that you can always choose to wear a mask.

Philharmonia will be the first large ensemble for which unmasking will be possible, supported by rapid tests. For this Friday’s dress rehearsal and concert, members of Philharmonia may choose to unmask and remove bell covers. Any member of Philharmonia who chooses to unmask is required to observe the following precautions:

  • On Friday, show your ID to pick up a box of rapid antigen tests from the monitor’s desk in the Adams Center. Each box contains two tests.
  • Self-administer a rapid test 30-60 minutes before the dress rehearsal.
  • Self-administer a rapid test 30-60 minutes before the concert.
  • Your completion of these rapid tests is on the honor system; it is your responsibility to remain masked if you did not take a rapid test right before the dress rehearsal or the concert.
  • You do not need to report negative results on rapid tests; if you receive a positive result, self-isolate and contact YSM HSL Krista Johnson immediately.
  • You must be up to date with your twice-weekly PCR tests through Yale Screening AND complete a rapid test. Rapid tests and PCR tests are not interchangeable and one cannot be substituted for the other; both layers of testing are required for unmasking.
  • You must remain masked if you are experiencing any symptoms, if you have not yet received the booster, or if you are monitoring as a close contact.

Please note that masking is still required for audiences at University events, including Friday’s Philharmonia concert. If you have any questions or concerns about these precautions, please contact the YSM HSL, Krista Johnson.

We look forward to sharing additional details about the next phase of unmasking shortly.

With best wishes,

Robert Blocker
