TRADITIONS IN TRANSITION

Mark Ulriksen Season 5 Painting

THE SPIRIT OF SEASON 5

The painting on the cover of the Season 5 brochure, created by accomplished freelance illustrator and artist Mark Ulriksen, tells a story about music and creativity, about inspiration and dreams and the shape of jazz to come. Of course, taken literally, it simply depicts a now familiar streetscape: the SFJAZZ Center at the corner of Franklin and Fell streets.

Award-winning journalist Richard Scheinin discusses how the painting helps tell a the story of Season 5 and it's theme: Traditions In Transition.

Shown in Painting L to R: Row 1- Dewey Redman, Joe Henderson, Ravi Shankar, Miles Davis, Alice Coltrane, Lester Young. Row 2 - Pat Metheny, Brian Blade, Dave Holland, Chucho Valdés, Wayne Shorter, Robert Glasper, Mary Stallings, Vijay Iyer, Rosanne Cash, SFJAZZ High School All-Stars. Row 3 - SFJAZZ Collective, Illustrator Mark Ulriksen, Christian McBride, Ornette Coleman.
