MNHS Announces January Round of Legacy Small Grants
Recipients received 42 Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Small Grants ($10,000 and less) totaling $355,452 in 23 counties. Learn more »

TOMORROW: March Grants Open House
April 7 - Online: The Grants Office will hold a virtual Grants Office Open House using Google Meet from 2 to 3:30 pm in order to provide support to our community in this time of social distancing. Small Grant Deadline
The next small grant deadline (requests of $10,000 or less) for the MHCHG program is Friday, April 8, 2022.

Large Grant Deadline
Pre-applications for the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants large grant round (requests over $10,000) will be due Friday, May 20, 2022. This is a required part of the large grant application process. Contact the Grants Office with questions.

Nary Wiped Out by Two Fires in 1900 and 1908
The summer of 1900 was hot and dry. Clouds of smoke hung over the Bemidji area and forest fires were reported from all directions. With high winds and a total lack of rain, the danger prevailed everywhere. Considerable property was destroyed within the county, and days and nights of hard fire fighting was carried on. Fire raged along the Brainerd & Northern tracks for 40 miles, burning out several settlers.  Read more »

- New Ulm: 12 to 1 pm. Brown County Historical Society - Local historian Dan Groebner will share his research about community theater in New Ulm. Live plays have entertained audiences in New Ulm since its earliest days. Turner Hall’s home talent drew crowds for German-language plays, and its large new theater (1901) attracted nationally prominent shows. Learn more »

Historic Context of Russia’s War in Ukraine: A round table discussion with three historians of Eastern Europe
April 7
- Winona: 4 pm. Winona County History Center. - The Winona County Historical Society is hosting a community discussion with three local historians specializing in Eastern European and Russian history. Julia Barr earned her Ph.D. in Russian/Soviet History at the University of Chicago in 2012, specializing in the history of Russian empire/imperialism. Matthew Lungerhausen is a professor in the History Department at Winona State. He earned his Ph.D. in History at the University of Minnesota in 2004. His research focuses on photography and nationalism in the Habsburg Monarchy between 1867 and 1918. Erich Lippman is an Associate Professor of History at Saint Mary's University. Humanities Initiatives at Community Colleges
May 9
- (Deadline): Humanities Initiatives at Community Colleges support community colleges’ commitment to educating students on a variety of educational and career paths. The program funds curricular and faculty development projects that help strengthen humanities programs and/or incorporate humanistic approaches in fields outside the humanities. Each project must be organized around a core topic or set of themes, drawn from humanities areas of studies such as history, philosophy, religion, literature, and composition and writing skills. Each project must also incorporate a broader institutional vision for the humanities at a community college.

- (Deadline): National Endowment for the Humanities - This grant program helps strengthen the teaching and study of the humanities by developing new humanities programs, resources, or courses, or by enhancing existing ones. This fund helps to build the capacity of existing preservation organizations and encourages collaboration among these organizations by providing grants for mentoring and other peer-to-peer and direct organizational development and learning opportunities. Grants from the Peter H. Brink Leadership Fund support travel costs and mentor honoraria with a maximum reimbursement of $2,500. Learn more »
