Omar Sosa, solo piano

'Alone Together at SFJAZZ Center'

THU, JUN 17 · 7PM PT
REBROADCAST: SUN, JUN 20 · 6PM PT

$5 · SFJAZZ MEMBERS-ONLY

This Thursday, June 17th at 7PM PT, SFJAZZ presents “an exhilarating solo concert… a momentous occasion” (SF Chronicle) with celebrated Cuban pianist Omar Sosa. This historic performance, filmed on June 1, 2021, was the first at SFJAZZ with a public audience since March 2020 and represents, in Sosa’s words, the “reopening of the temple.” Based largely in improvisations that encompass the occasion-appropriate themes of “blessings,” “conversations,” and “sharing the moment,” Sosa presents an unforgettable performance blending acoustic piano, electronics, and percussion. This exclusive concert is available only to SFJAZZ Members for $5.

"Sosa's pianisms evoke distant echoes of McCoy Tyner's power, Keith Jarrett's improvisational flights of fancy, and Thelonious Monk's angular harmonies, transforming the piano into 88 well-tuned drums."
— Village Voice

Digital ticket holders will have access to the live stream premiere on Thursday at 7PM PT and the encore rebroadcast on Sunday, June 20th at 6PM PT.

On Friday, June 18th at 5PM PT, SFJAZZ presents rising jazz superstar vocalist Jazzmeia Horn, whom the late great Jon Hendricks called “one of the best voices I’ve heard in over 40 years.” The Dallas native was the winner of the 2015 ‘Thelonious Monk Competition’, and DownBeat’s 2018 ‘Rising Star Female Vocalist’. Both her 2017 debut A Social Call and follow-up album Love & Liberation in 2018 were nominated for a GRAMMY Award. Filmed in June 2019, during the 37th San Francisco Jazz Festival, for this concert she is backed by her stellar trio.

"Dallas-born Horn emerges as a fully realized stylist and a first-rate scatter whose vivacity, imagination, gutsiness and sociopolitical savvy echo the likes of Carter and Abbey Lincoln. Simply put, she is as exciting a discovery as Cécile McLorin Salvant or Gregory Porter."
— JazzTimes

This broadcast will also include a real-time chat to provide fascinating insights about the music performed during the concert. It's also a great way to interact with other SFJAZZ Members.
