Dear friends of the Chicago Architecture Center,

Whatever 2020 brought to you, we at the CAC are deeply grateful that you came to us—to 90 online programs and virtual tours as well as safely distanced walking tours, river cruises and the Center’s galleries from July through October. Those in-person offerings are back on hold but we look forward to reinstating them, and unveiling two new Center exhibits, in 2021.

Thanks to the families who welcomed us into their homes, and to the students and budding architects whose questions refreshed our perspectives. Thanks to the CAC docents who webcast their passions and smiles to design lovers worldwide. Thanks to the national and global leaders who joined us in conversation and, of course, thanks to our many donors and members whose continued support softens the blow of a tourism industry that remains frozen.

In some ways, the CAC still is what it’s been for more than 50 years: a group of people compelled to share Chicago with others. But 2020 changed us all and we won’t pretend otherwise. Embracing change—without letting go of what’s important—is what loving Chicago is all about.

It’s something we think about every time we install another dozen updates to the Chicago City Model, a miniature metropolis in the heart of our Center, itself located in the heart of Chicago. The rail lines, green boulevards, sidewalks and waterways that radiate outward are like a circulatory system, facilitating the movement of people and ideas to keep this city alive.

Those are the same routes we follow on our tours and it’s heartwarming to remember there’s an endless supply of stories to tell along the way. We’ll keep searching and learning to make sure what we share is what’s most important.
