June kicked off the 53rd year of pride for the LGBTQ+ community. In Chicago, pride flags were erected across the city and events celebrating the community commenced. In the past 53 years, the LGBTQ+ community has made incredible strides in advocating for their equal rights. Their advocacy work has addressed issues of employment stability and safety. Now, they are turning their attention to the intergenerational need for housing. LGBTQ+ youth make up 40% of houseless populations, and community elders need housing that addresses their aging needs.
With innovative approaches and consideration of the community’s needs, architects across the world are designing housing solutions. In Chicago, organizations like One Roof Chicago partnered with WJW Architects to design intergenerational housing for the LGBTQ+ community. This pioneering approach bridges the needs of houseless youth and aging elders while creating an intergenerational space to occupy together, exemplifying how architecture plays an essential role in addressing the needs of communities.
