A Behind-the-Scenes Peek at YOUR Theatre

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.”

-- Theodor Seuss Geisel (Mar. 2, 1904 – Sept. 24, 1991), an American children’s author
and poet, known for writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss.
This line is spoken by the Once-ler in the book The Lorax, written as a warning to protect the environment, in 1971.

Virginia Rep K-12 Theatre Camps

Virginia Rep's fun-filled camps are full of creative exploration and imaginative play. They provide unique, exciting performance opportunities for students K – 12. Camps are designed with the novice and seasoned performer in mind.  With instruction by some of Virginia's finest theatre artists and educators, your dramatic student will have a theatrical experience like no other! Spring Break camp runs Apr. 4 – 8, and Summer Camps run various periods throughout June, July and Aug. All camps are socially distanced and in person! COVID protocols include regular sanitizing of high-touch areas, daily temperature checks, smaller class sizes, and lower camp capacity. To ensure the safety of all participants, all campers and staff are required to show proof of vaccination and to wear a face mask covering their nose and mouth at all times. For more information or to register, email Irene Kuykendall at ikuykendall@virginiarep.org, or call 804 282-2620. See you there!

Bugs Bunny at the Symphony - The Virginia Rep Connection

Bugs Bunny at the Symphony

We loved going to see Bugs Bunny at the Symphony, the iconic concert brought here by the Richmond Symphony two weeks back. We hope you were there, too. The reason for our interest was not only the beautiful music of Wagner, Rossini, Strauss, etc., or the classic toons like What’s Opera, Doc?, The Rabbit of Seville, and Rhapsody Rabbit. The real reason we wanted to go was to see the work of our buddy Rick Gehr, who acted with Virginia Rep in the mid-70s, then moved to LA and began his legendary career as film editor for Warner Bros. cartoons. When the great composer George Daugherty, who conducted here two weeks ago, first had the idea to partner with Bugs and friends in 1990, he called Warner Bros. and reached Rick, who’s been editing the cartoon portion of the concert ever since. Another Virginia Rep alum makes good!

REPrise Brings the Arts to Seniors Who Can't Come to Us

Desireé Roots and Scott Wichmann in Ella and Her Fella Frank

Desirée Roots & Scott Wichmann in Ella and Her Fella Frank

For years, we’ve been privileged to honor our commitment to inclusion and access by reaching out to senior theatre lovers who can no longer make it to our shows. We’re proud to take selections from many of our musicals “on the road,” so that those residing in senior living facilities or attending daytime programs in senior centers can share the joy of live performance. As COVID persists, many of our loyal patrons can’t join us downtown due to pandemic protocols designed to keep them safe. In compliance with all industry-standard protocols for both theatres and resident facilities, we venture forth to bring song and dance selections to sequestered fans throughout the region. Most recently, we took our production of Ella and Her Fella Frank on the road. If you know of a senior center that would like to participate, or if you or your organization would like to help fund these run-outs, please contact Mark Persinger at mpersinger@virginiarep.org

Two-Way Talkback

Hearts opened up following last week’s post about the fire at Fox School. Many of you want to support our offers to help. The offers are still out there, and we’re in conversation with both Richmond Public Schools and the Fox PTA to determine the best way to support citywide efforts to raise funds and keep students and teachers supplied. We promise, we’ll let you know as soon as plans are finalized.

We encourage your comments, corrections and feedback. Please email your thoughts to mhaber@virginiarep.org.
